Given the constant movement and uncertainty swirling around the high school basketball landscape, there are a lot of players who are still being overlooked. Take Cary Academy’s group as a prime example. Although their young guys, McCoy Williams and Aidan Rousseau, have plenty of time to gain traction with college coaches, it’s perplexing as to why Wyatt DeGraaf doesn’t have more action entering his senior season. Regardless, the Chargers are quietly gearing up with one of the better frontcourt pairings in the state. Let’s take a closer look at each…

Starting with the older DeGraaf, who is among those prospects whose lack of offers simply doesn’t make sense. At a strong, fluid 6-foot-10, DeGraaf is a straightforward big man with athleticism, defensive instincts, and the ability to control the glass. He’s a reliable pick-and-roll partner and post-up option, physical enough to battle through contact when securing position or finishing around the basket. DeGraaf is comfortable knocking down the occasional perimeter jumper from midrange or beyond the arc, but typically does most of his work within the paint. He runs the floor properly in transition and shows the understanding of how to operate in various different defensive coverages. Given his archetype, physical profile, low-maintenance identity, and clear upside, DeGraaf should be a target for way more programs.

His interior mate, Rousseau, is quietly one of the more polished young post players in North Carolina. Armed with an impressive blend of IQ, footwork, and finishing moves over either shoulder, it’s easy to see what separates him from others. He’s a fluid athlete with length, positioning, and timing. Offensively, Rousseau regularly dominates opponents through his post ability, but also possesses reliable shooting ability from midrange and beyond the arc. Although he’s an efficient floor-spacer, Rousseau is at his best when toying with opposing bigs on the block. He’s a great passer and useful threat off the bounce, which allows him to consistently take advantage of whatever the opposition gives him. It’s still early in his development, but all signs are pointing to Rousseau being a name worth remembering. Combined with the aforementioned Williams, Cary Academy should have a few nice pieces over the foreseeable future.
