We start out our previews with East Carolina, as the Pirates are looking to build upon a 16-17 overall record last season.  The Pirates return several intriguing talent that should really help this team overall, as they have a chance to improve their standings this season.

As far as players returning, guard RJ Felton is the top returner from last year, as he averaged 13.8ppg and 4.5rpg. He brings tremendous energy and motor, as the 6’3 guard made a clear jump in nearly every category last year and could see those numbers increase even more. But Felton won’t be the only guard that returns that should help this team progress; Jaden Walker nearly averaged 30 minutes last year and brings a ton of versatility to the court, averaging 7.6ppg, 4.6rpg, 3.2apg, and 1.3spg (started 16 games). Quentin Diboundje also started 19 games last year for the Pirates as well, earning more time and gaining valuable experience after playing in only seven games as a freshman.

The Pirates do lose Javon Small, who only played in 18 games, but they brought in two big transfers to help lead the charge. Bobby Pettiford (Kansas) and Cam Hayes (LSU) were two big players to come in, not only because they are NC players but because they both are very talented and have a chance to really shine. Pettiford received more playing time last season for Kansas, playing in 32 games and averaging 12 minutes per game. But this is his chance to really shine and be one of those clear lead guys that made him a highly touted prospect coming out of high school. Hayse also has been incredibly consistent throughout his career, racking up nearly 100 games under his belt and averaging around eight points per game throughout his career. Both should REALLY help this program in a big way.

Where East Carolina is fascinating is at the forward position, as they return two very talented prospects in Brandon Johnson (12.3ppg, 8.1rpg) and Ezra Ausar (9.8, 5.3rpg). Both played extremely well for ECU last year and matured as a prospect as the season went on. Ausar was productive with his time, getting downhill and finishing well (something he has done throughout high school and at the collegiate level). Both have a chance to take the next step, which should excite East Carolina fans.

As far as young new faces, Callum Richard and Cyra Malonga could see some playing time as they both bring 6’10/6’11 frames to the table.  You can’t teach size and both could be a nice piece in controlling the paint at times.  Ta’Korrie Faison is a strong and physical prospect that knows how to produce, finish through contact, and be a presence on the boards as well.
