Given the fact that July is right around the corner, it feels like no better time to start introducing some of the players that college coaches should be monitoring. Going into the busiest recruiting month of the year, our Summer Havoc should be a hotbed for coaches and players alike. As usual, Phenom Hoops will have prospects of all levels in attendance. This series will continue by taking a closer look at Derek Ross Jr. of Jordan High School and Wildcats Elite.

We’ve written extensively about Ross, recently stating, “The Wildcats Elite played at a high level in their contest against a notable opponent, and Ross was a massive reason why. Though he’s still among the younger guys on either team, he’s extremely smart and poised with the ball in his hands. Ross handles the ball very well, creates for himself and others, and applies constant scoring pressure from all three levels. He’s a pesky all-around defender, which is evidenced by his ability to mirror opponents and force turnovers (and push transition play) at a fairly high volume. Ross is always looking to make the right play, but is capable of taking over and getting whatever he wants offensively. It’s so easy to like what he brings to a team.” Later followed by, “Regardless of context or situation, Ross can be found shining as the focal point for this group. He’s an incredibly smart, dynamic point guard prospect with seemingly the perfect blend of playmaking and three-level scoring. Ross displays pace, quickness, and a natural understanding of how to properly set the tone as a two-way leader. He breaks down opponents with such ease, touches the paint whenever he wants, and consistently makes brilliant decisions with the ball in his hands. Ross continues to solidify himself as one of the most exciting, electric players in the state. Watching him play is always an enjoyable experience.”

There are certain players who simply know how to confidently run a team, and Ross is among the very best across North Carolina. He’s a slightly smaller guard, but it doesn’t seem to affect his ability to tear opponents to shreds on both ends of the floor. Ross’ combination of high IQ, crafty creation instincts, and incredible quickness makes him a nightmare to keep in front. He effortlessly breaks down opposing guards, touches the paint, and makes brilliant reads with the ball in his hands. Ross reliably scores the ball from all three levels, showing a clear comfort level when attacking off the bounce, pulling up from midrange, or hitting deep three-pointers off the catch or dribble. He’s a very smart, unselfish point guard with a dynamic identity. Ross is a blur in the open floor and consistently makes the right play. Add in his pesky defense, and it’s easy to see all the things that make Ross among the most exciting floor generals in the state. College coaches can watch him at our Summer Havoc July 6-9.
