Given the fact that July is right around the corner, it feels like no better time to start introducing some of the players that college coaches should be monitoring. Going into the busiest recruiting month of the year, our Summer Havoc should be a hotbed for coaches and players alike. As usual, Phenom Hoops will have prospects of all levels in attendance. This series will continue by taking a closer look at Makel Smith of Morehead and PSB Kisonas.

We’ve watched Makel Smith throughout his journey, previously stating, “The right floor general can drastically change the outlook of any team, and Smith certainly fits that notion. His combination of IQ, pace, poise, and well-rounded skillset make him a very reliable, appealing prospect. Smith displays natural leadership and a high level of maturity while calmly dictating the offense and containing his assignment defensively. He creates for himself and others at a constant rate, applies efficient scoring pressure from all levels, and understands how to make the right play with unwavering consistency. Smith doesn’t possess any real weakness in his identity. College coaches will eventually be battling for his services as a dependable all-around leader.”

Given how much buzz he’s generated throughout the spring months of this travel ball season, it feels like the right time for college coaches to start extending offers to Smith. He has obvious value as a balanced, team-oriented floor general with poise, patience, and excellent feel on both ends of the floor. Smith scores at an efficient rate from all levels while consistently looking to get others involved. He’s a reliable on-ball defender with the necessary instincts to force turnovers at a healthy rate, which regularly leads to scoring opportunities in transition. Smith is a useful off-ball threat but is simply at his best when dictating the action as the primary creator. Though it should probably go without saying, expect him to turn heads over the coming weeks. College coaches can watch Smith at our Summer Havoc on July 6-9.
