Sometimes life has a unique way of determining fate. We’ve all had situations where we go down the winding path of possibilities and ultimately return where we belong—only to realize the sheen and luster were visible the whole time. After paving a legacy as the head coach at Weddington High School, Gary Ellington decided to join the college ranks (detailed here). Although North Carolina high school basketball was losing one of its top coaches, Queens gained an exceptional person and basketball mind. However, after careful thought and consideration, Ellington is set to come back to his position as the head coach of Weddington.

This announcement will inevitably send shockwaves through the grassroots basketball community. The special group of Chase Lowe, Kyle Frazier, and AJ Cook has departed, but Ellington always finds a way. Actually, they still have an abundance of talent within their current roster. While they might not go undefeated and climb national rankings this season, Ellington and the Warriors should still be among the better teams in North Carolina. The likes of Jack Ellyson, KJ Younger, and their focal point Grant Hamilton have already proven to be valuable pieces on the varsity level. Add in the potential emergence of various young pieces, and this group will remain very entertaining.

It’s also worth noting that Ellington will retain one of the best coaching staffs across the state. Jeremy Ford will provide a ton of insight on the sidelines (especially considering how well Carsner carried the torch and Ford has led CC Elite/Weddington this summer). After his year in college basketball, the high school ranks are excited to welcome back Coach Ellington. Expect this already competitive group to take another step forward over these next few months, as they gear up for the season.
