Newly a year ago, Phenom Hoops introduced you to a freshman that you would want to put on your watch list in Andrew Grimes from Clayton HS (Full Article Here)

And we quickly fast forward to today, and Grimes is now putting up impressive numbers as a sophomore and is earning the attention of college coaches.

Back in 2022 and watching Grimes with the Raiders, he quickly impressed with his feel for the game at an early age. And he quickly was put on our watch list as one that could rise up the rankings in the Class of 2025.  At that point, we had this to say:

“He has the early size that stands out as a freshman at 6’6 and still growing, as well as a very nice, fluid feel down in the post.  He understands how to post up on the block and make himself available, showing nice touch and athleticism down in the paint.  But then, he can surprise you with his handles for a forward, displaying nice comfort level in bringing the ball up at times, pushing in transition, or creating nicely for himself.”

Recently catching up with the forward, Grimes has been putting in the work to improve his game, as he wanted to be way more assertive than he was as a freshman.

“I’m way more aggressive than last year, a lot stronger and faster. And I can score on two levels but I’m still working on my 3pt shot but it’s definitely there.  I want to eventually become a wing but still play the forward position because I know that I’m still strong and I have a great post-hook. But I know that I can expand my game to a higher more elite level. I don’t move like regular forwards or big men.”

And his game is quickly catching on with college coaches, as Youngstown State, Radford, and UC San Diego have all offered already.

“It does excite me but of course, I know that I still have a long way to go,” Grimes told Phenom Hoops.  “I think what excites me the most is that I’m seeing my hard work pay off and I know that I’m doing something right.”

Though his recruitment is just starting, we have a feeling that this is going to be a young man you will be hearing a lot more about, and his list of offers should only continue to grow.
