It is hard to not get excited about a few storylines going on around the world of college basketball, even though it is still very early.  But with big games now starting and the season really feeling like it is getting started, we are looking around at a few players.

One player that many have had their eye on this season and will continue to do so is senior Manny Bates, who transferred to Butler and is blossoming early with his new team. Last year, Bates, unfortunately, had a setback at NC State where he was injured in the first minute of the season and eventually missed the entire season. It was supposed to be the breakout year for the big man in Raleigh but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Missing the entire year and getting healthy, while also transferring to a new program in Butler, Bates is starting the season possibly the best way possible and college basketball fans are finally seeing what the 6’11 big man can offer when healthy.

Yes, it has only been two games so far, but Bates is showing that he has the potential to be a double-double machine as well as a dominant piece on the defensive end. He started the season out with a 25-point, 11-rebound performance and backed it up with a 16-point, 10-rebound, 3-block showing vs. Penn State.

Could his trend and dominance continue' Time will only tell with that. But it is great to finally see Bates healthy and showcasing his full potential, as he looks to be one of the clear leaders for Butler this year.

What Was Said By Phenom Hoops:

“Bates already possesses a defensive threat with his length and height, while also being a monster on the boards.  He also continues to show that he can be a threat down in the post with his post moves.  What the staff at Northwood Temple continues to work with Bates is building his confidence and becoming the “alpha dog” they know he can be; face up to the basket and really look to dominate on the court.  He also has continued to work on making his jumper consistent, making him even a bigger threat.” – Phenom Hoops in 2017

“Bates is definitely one to put in the memory bank and your SIM CARD. What you see currently is not the finished product. That being said, Bates has unlimited upside and potential. He’s extremely long and sports an enormous 7’3 wingspan that is accompanied by an equally impressive attitude. Coach Praeger stated, “Bates is an unselfish player. His attitude and interest in learning the game will serve him well in his development.” More importantly, Bates has solid athleticism and plays above the rim. The next step in his development is to get physically stronger which will come in due time. He has passer friendly hands and is also a willing passer out of the post.” – Phenom Hoops in 2016
