The summer has come and gone but we are still talking about players that came through our platform at Phenom Hoops and are racking in the offers. 2023 Jasen Brooks was one of those guys, coming in with Pro One and really being a strong piece on the court at the Coach Rick TOC and at the Summer Havoc. So much so that both of our scouts wrote about him as a standout in each event.

“Brooks led the charge once again, and he is a name that continues to have a strong summer for Pro One. He is a strong tone-setter on the floor, really showing the ability to dictate the offense, find ways to score in a variety of ways, and score from multiple levels on the floor. He really elevated his game in the second half early on Day 4, scoring 17 of his 22 points to help secure a tough win.” – Patrick O’Brien at Coach Rick TOC

“It’s easy to appreciate the balance within this Pro One Biven squad, but Brooks quite clearly set the tone for this group. He’s a strong, polished guard prospect who comfortably dictates the action with the ball in his hands. Brooks is great at getting downhill and finishing through contact but also shoots the ball at a very high percentage—both off the catch and bounce. He set up others, defended his position, and rebounded well for his size.” – Jeff Bendel at Summer Havoc

Brooks was back in the news once again this week, as college programs are realizing what he can provide, as UC San Diego was the latest to reach out his way and provide an offer. Phenom Hoops checked in with Brooks about all the latest with his game and recruitment; check out what he had to say.

Phenom: How did everything go this summer as far as basketball for you and with Pro One'
Brooks: It went great playing with Pro One.  I joined Pro One this AAU spring and summer. The environment, coaches, and teammates were great. It’s a very unselfish program with people trying to get everyone playing to their goal.  I gained a lot of interest from schools of all levels this summer. Today, I received my first offer of this summer.

Phenom: Had to be a great moment. What was that like, receiving that offer from San Diego'
Brooks: It felt amazing; last year I didn’t get the most recruitment and looks but knowing that all the hard work that I’ve put into the game is paying off is a great feeling like no other.

Phenom: What did the staff have to say when they offered' What did they like about your game'
Brooks: Me, my mom, and my high school head coach Reggie Tucker had a phenomenal zoom call with the entire UC San Diego coaching staff. The staff has made me a priority and feel as if I fit their style of play and system very well. Coach Book has been showing interest in me since the start of last high school season. He visited me at my high school, and we have created a solid relationship. They explained and showed me on film how my versatility of being able to play on and off the ball would be used. Coach Olen stated that when he and his staff find a player that can align with their program, it makes it easy for them to progress with that player. Also, they liked the way I defend on and off the ball. On the offensive end, they like how I can consistently knock down the three and how I can score any many ways but also how I can make plays for others. Coach Olen is someone that I can see myself competing for but most importantly growing under as a young man. We talked more about other things than just basketball and you can tell that he cares about his players. I’m looking forward to taking my official visit to UC San Diego and building a relationship with Coach Olen and the rest of the staff.

Phenom: When will you be taking a visit there'
Brooks: I haven’t got the official date, but it will be sometime in October.

Phenom: What other offers do you hold' And how has your relationship been with them'
Brooks: I hold offers from Stetson and Texas Southern. I haven’t had much contact with them since the beginning of my sophomore year when I was offered.

Phenom: What other schools have been showing interest'
Brooks: Indiana State, Navy, VMI, Wingate, Citadel, UAH, Pacific, Cal Poly, Drake, Radford, Maine, New Mexico State, and Lincoln Memorial.

Phenom: Have any other visits you would like to make'
Brooks: Yes sir, I have been talking to Lincoln Memorial, they have been planning to have me on a visit.

Phenom: What do you think you can provide to a school'
Brooks: I can be a scorer on and off the ball, I can defend out of my position, hustle, and I can get paint touches to help get my teammates open. I’m also vocal on defense, I can be a role player, and bring leadership.
