West Cabarrus, coached by Jabarr Adams, entered the contest with a 8-4 conference record and 13-12 overall. With a probable bid for the NCHSAA state playoffs, West Cabarrus secured a 77-70 overtime victory over Mooresville. Mooresville, coached by Armard Moore entered the game with a 10-2 conference record and 20-2 overall record. West Cabarrus was swept by Mooresville during the regular season and a win would put them in the inaugural Greater Metro 4A conference tournament championship.

The game was exciting and high level action was on display by both teams. At the end of the first quarter, Mooresville led 15-14, but West Cabarrus took 34-33 halftime lead. The second half was a game of runs, but Mooresville took a 51-49 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Both games laid it all on the floor and it was only fitting that the game was knotted up 65-65 at the end of regulation.
