Mikel is a fantastic athlete, quick and strong with great motor and unrivaled competitiveness. Adept at creating off the bounce, he’s very comfortable and efficient pulling up off the dribble and is an outstanding shot maker from all levels. Mikel has a solid handle and great quickness and can create his shot from anywhere on the floor be it in the half-court or in transition. He accelerates so quickly even from a standstill and plays with great balance.
Mikel has strong legs and has the ability to shift gears and blow by defenders seemingly whenever he wants. He is fearless when attacking the paint and finishes around the rim at a good rate from various angles. Most impressive is his mastery at finding shots and the ability to get to his spots and hit the pullup jumper with outstanding efficiency. He can stop on a dime, he is quick and reactive off the floor, his shot mechanics are outstanding and his release is high. He is so efficient in the mid-range both off the dribble and on catch and shoot opportunities. He does an outstanding job using contact or footwork in an effort to create space. He can get open both for perimeter shot opportunities or on basket cuts and can absorb contact and finish at a good rate. Mikel can play either guard position as he does an outstanding job finding cutters and kicking out to the open man. Demonstrates solid court vision, reliable passing skills, and decision-making. He’s so dangerous off the dribble; like a technician, he can dismantle a defense, manipulating even the slightest seams using strength, quickness, and change of pace to make a play for himself and for teammates.
On the defensive end, he is engaged and locked in at all times. Quick hips and footwork, excellent lateral quickness, and able to defend just about anyone on the perimeter. Makes good rotations, solid weak side defender and he has a nose for the basketball be it pursuing loose balls, getting steals in passing lanes or sneaking in and grabbing rebounds or getting stick backs. Mikel stays active and productive on both ends, plays with great energy and passion. He had a solid year last season for Atlantic Shores Christian School and followed that up with a breakout summer. Being part of a program with a winning tradition and under the tutelage of Atlantic Shores Head Coach Mike Hudgins who has developed a number of college basketball players at various levels throughout his successful coaching career, I can’t help but be excited knowing Mikel’s work habits that he will maximize his enormous potential and earn the opportunity to play beyond high school at some level of college basketball. He loves to compete, he embraces challenges and he is a fearless and relentless foe! The kind of on-court presence who sets the tone and can change a game on either end of the floor at a time!
