Phenom Hoops has had a chance to get out during the month of June as teams have been participating in several teams’ camps and during the live period. One event that Phenom attended was the Catawba Team Camp, bringing in several teams from around the region and giving us an early look at what each program has to offer.
Scrolling down the list of teams attending the camp, Cox Mill was another one that I was eager to see in action. Head coach Ty Johnson has done a tremendous job so far while leading the Chargers, coming off a strong season last year and returning yet again another roster of college-level prospects. The Chargers look to have a lot of depth, so much that they had two teams on display at the camp, both varsity and junior varsity, but you could certainly see a few names from JV make their way up to varsity.
When starting with the Chargers, you look at the leaders that quickly grabbed your attention in 2022 Marcus Morgan, who returns as a starter from last year, and 2022 CJ Wilson, who is coming from AL Brown. Morgan has already grabbed the attention of college programs but he is now going to be depended on even more as he continues to fill up the stat sheet, being consistent in scoring, creating for others, getting on the boards, and bringing a defensive presence to the floor. Wilson is a strong-bodied guard that can really help in scoring the ball, attacking the basket, and knocking down shots from the perimeter while also giving the Chargers another ball-handler on the floor.
2022 Myles Morgan, 2022 Cameron Goodwin, and 2022 Rasheed Baldwin are three other rising seniors that really should be a big part of the rotation for Cox Mill this upcoming season and will be counted on to step up and be a leader on the court.
2023 Titus Ivey was a new name that quickly grabbed our attention, as he actually missed the entire season last year due to an injury but he would have been a starter for the Chargers. He is a 6’5 guard that is just getting back fully healthy; he is long and very athletic, as he really could be one that could see a tremendous bump with college coaches now being back on the floor.
A few other players that we saw on the court, whether it was for Varsity or for JV, were 2024 Isaiah Dennis, who is a new name but one the coaching staff seems to be excited about. 2023 Covington McCurty brings a lot of size down low in the paint but is still also a developing prospect that is mobile and can be effective on both sides of the court. 2025 Sean Dunn is a freshman that is quick and shifty and can really be an effective scorer as well.
The list of players though for Cox Mill looks to be a long one once again and Coach Johnson does a tremendous job in showcasing his players, playing team basketball, and helping his kids get a chance to play at the next level. The Chargers should look to be strong once again, to go along with good depth, so make sure you slot Cox Mill on your must-see teams this upcoming season.
