A player that we have been able to watch on several occasions continues to impress. He is also one that many could say has been overlooked but could be in for a big season at Westminster Catawba and in the upcoming summer.
2022 MJ Collins is a 6’4 prospect that brings a lot of intangibles that could translate to the next level. He has a good wingspan, showcases good athleticism on the court, displays a smooth and effortless shot from multiple levels, and can make an impact on both ends of the court.
Our own, Jeff Bendel, had this to say after watching him at the Phenom Holiday Classic.
“I’d expect 6’4 ’22 MJ Collins to become one of the hottest prospects in the region over the next twelve months. Strong, physical frame with IQ, athleticism, and an all-around skill set. Plays a complete game with no glaring weaknesses.”
So far this season at Westminster Catawba, Collins is averaging 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 52 percent from three and 57 percent overall. Playing at the school, he says it has helped him tremendously and he is continuing to develop as a player.
“It’s been great,” Collins told Phenom Hoops. “We have a great coaching staff who pushes and believes in all their players. My teammates are very talented and we just keep our heads down and work. I’ve gotten quicker and more explosive and I’ve become a better rebounder.”
Recruitment Update:
Right now, Collins holds an offer from Presbyterian, one he received back in July. But when speaking to him more about the latest, Collins believes his stock is rising with some college programs. Murray State has been showing a lot of interest, while schools like Morehead State and Virginia Tech have reached out as well.
“Murray State has shown the most interest, they talk to me about everything from basketball to family,” he said. “Virginia Tech told me to just keep working and that they want to see me in person. Morehead state said they really like my game.”
