College basketball is back, and fans are excited to see their teams and players back on the court.  It will certainly be a year to remember, as several Phenom Alums will be taking the floor.

One player of interest that should be fun to watch and one to really keep an eye on is UVA-Wise 6’5 junior Cameron Whiteside, who came from Thomasville, North Carolina. Whiteside attended Thomasville high school and he showed that he could be a flat-out scorer on the floor and he has only continued that into his college years.

Whiteside had a terrific freshman season in which he averaged 13.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, starting 23 games at UVA-Wise.  He topped that season last year as only a junior, averaging 20.8 points per game (1st in the SAC) and 7.4 rebounds per game (5th in the SAC); he also appeared and started in all 28 games.

Now, the 6’5 prospect heads into his junior season and it may be hard to top the numbers he produced last year but it seems like he is off to a great start.

Whiteside started off the season with a new career-high, as he torched the nets for 42 points and 11 rebounds, recording his seventh career double-double. Against Tusculum, he was able to get the line and go 18-for-19 from the line, while finishing the game 11-for-20 from the floor.

The junior hoped to be on the winning side against Tusculum but he certainly showed that he is going to be a show worth watching this year.

NC Phenom 150 Evaluation in 2017:

Whiteside is a team player and does all his damage within the confines of a team concept. He has good length, deep range, and the ability to finish at all 3 levels. Whiteside also has the makings of a very good defender when you piece together his length, athleticism, and motor. Whiteside’s camp coach stated, “Cameron finishes above the rim, he is quick for his position and consistently hits the 3 ball.”
