Being in Rock Hill this past weekend, Phenom Hoops had another chance to see the development of 2023 6’5 Jakel Powell, just another name that will be part of a loaded 2023 class in North Carolina.
When watching his game, you can’t help but see a prospect with great size and a game to back it up. Recently at the Phenom Challenge, Patrick O’Brien had this to say about his game.
“The blend of size and ability to play along the perimeter is highly intriguing. He knocked down shots from multiple levels, hitting multiple 3-pointers and he plays with a great early understanding of the game.”

Powell is a reliable shooter, especially with his length and ability to get to the rim. And his developing skillset should only continue.
That is why schools are already giving him an early look and he recently announced that he had received his first offer from Winthrop.
“I’m happy and blessed to receive an offer,” he told Phenom Hoops. “It’s an honor that a school likes my game and style of play. It feels really, really good (to receive that first offer).”
An impressive offer for sure and it certainly shouldn’t be his last, Powell is focused and ready to continue to make his mark this summer.
“My mindset is to win and get out there and play, do what I can do to help my team. I’m looking to work on my strength and get more explosive and always working on my shot to get better.”
As far as other schools, Liberty, Florida State, Clemson, and Presbyterian have also expressed interest his way.
