A name that has just really started to burst onto the scene, 2022 6’3 Saxby Sunderland is one to start getting familiar with quickly. Playing at Flint Hill in Virginia, the rising junior is cashing in on an impressive season in which he averaged 15 points, four assists, and five rebounds.
Sunderland has a very intriguing game, showing a tremendous feel for the game. Which is why he is starting to garner several eyes his way.
“My game is very crafty and I think my game is pretty well rounded,” he told Phenom Hoops. “I’ve always been taught not to be a positional player and do whatever it takes for my team to win. My strengths I would say are definitely my shooting ability and my off-hand finishes.”
Sunderland’s recruitment is just starting, earning his first offer from SE Louisiana not long ago but also added a big one from VCU just last week.
The offer from VCU is one that excites him, as the coaching staff seems to be excited about Sunderland’s game and they are looking forward to getting him over for a visit.
“What intrigues me about the program is that they play at the highest level and they have a rich history,” he said. “It meant a lot to earn that offer, it shows my hard work is paying off.”
VCU though could just be the start for Sunderland, as he has heard from Virginia, BYU, Butler, Stanford, Georgia, St. Joseph’s, Rhode Island, Princeton, James Madison, FAU, Akron, Holy Cross, Charlotte, Air Force, George Mason, Brown, and Hartford.
“They’ve all been very interested and eager to get me over for a visit and see me play more,” he replied. “It’s been great, definitely a process that I am adjusting too and enjoying. I’m just now soaking it all in. It’s really been a testament to all the nights I’ve spent in the gym working.”
So far, he hasn’t been able to make any visits to schools, as he is just now bursting onto the scene. But Sunderland’s recruitment could quickly take off and should be a target for many programs this offseason.
