6’8 Trey Murphy picks Virginia
The allure of athletics and academics were key factors in the decision, along with the trust in Coach Bennett and the staff, stated 6’8 Rice transfer Trey Murphy. Earlier in the week, Murphy told Phenom Hoops, “Coach Bennett is a great coach. They put an emphasis on defense, which is vital for me to play at the next level.”
When Trey Murphy graduated high school in 2018, the North Carolina native was a thin 6’5. In the past two years at Rice University, Murphy has grown to 6’8 in bare feet. Last season, Murphy averaged 13.7 PPG, 5.5 RPG, shooting 43% from the floor, 37% from the 3-point line and 82.4% from the free throw line.
Murphy is a youthful 6’8 with a 7’1 wingspan and his ability to score from all three levels makes him an attractive prospect. Murphy will bring versatility and the ability to guard multiple positions. Murphy will use the redshirt year to get bigger and stronger and has one of the top strength coaches in the country in Mike Curtis.
