Phenom’s Challenge LIVE
6’1” 2019 Raishaun Brown of Team Heat 16s
By Jamie Shaw

Sometimes you just watch a player and he instantly catches your eye. Maybe even as an unheralded type he is obviously the best player on the floor and making things happen on both ends of the court. It may take different settings to notice it, but when you look back at previous notes it was obvious all along.

This type of epiphany happened when watching 6’1” 2018 Raishaun Brown play for Team Heat 16s at our Queen City Challenge two weekends ago. Brown had complete control of the court, from the minute he stepped on. The point guard got where he wanted off the bounce, he made shots at all 3 levels and he was a stopper on the defensive end of the floor. He did everything for his team, against major, big time opponents.

This is not the first time we have watched Brown, we have seen him numerous times leading the way with Carolina Day School. He has also been a mainstay at our Phenom 150 camps. As we mentioned it was right in our faces the whole time, check out what we wrote about him after his last Phenom 150 performance, “Raishaun is a tremendous athletic player who doubles over as a defensive monster with fantastic finishing abilities. His first step is awesome; he’s fearless and knows how to immediately transition from offense to lock-down defense, and vice-versa. He can really shoot the ball and is tenacious on defense, which he loves to play; showed he’s a great rebounder. Raishaun is a great listener and is a very good, coachable player that is definitely a college bound basketball player.”

The light clicked on for us, Brown is firmly planted among one of the top point guards in North Carolina’s loaded up 2019 class. This is why we are major advocates for watching players in multiple settings, you get the best look at them. After watching him in a game last year we wrote, “Brown is a player whose athleticism and two-way chops really caught opponents on their heels, Raishaun Brown. He’s a wing that can fill it up on offense then turn around and lock up the best perimeter threat on the defensive end. Brown’s offensive game is based away from the ball most of the time and he does quite well; he’s able to pick his spots and shows the ability to score by the jump shot or on the drive. His defensive intensity is what really earned him extra points with those in attendance, as his passion is really in a league of its own.

The second college coaches watch Brown, he will immediately be added to their recruiting boards. He is a leader and a winner, the type of guy you want on your side as you walk into battle.
