Now that is he an unsigned senior, 6’6” Deshawn Corprew of Quality Education should be looked at as a high major prospect and a Top 50 recruit nationally.
For many, Corprew broke out after he was an afterthought invite to the NBA Top 100 camp. In that camp, Corprew was great. He showed that he belonged, however not only belonged but dominated play. Even after the performance that Corprew had on the EYBL Circuit averaging 16 points (55% FG), 6 boards, 2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, people still didn’t talk about him.
Little did they know that Corprew has been dominating competition like this, for years. Corprew has been coming to Phenom events since his freshman year. Even then we saw that the kid was special. After our 2012 NC Phenom 150 camp we wrote, “Corprew came into the camp virtually as an unknown and may have left the camp the best player regardless of class. In our opinion, Corprew will make a strong case to become one of the top players nationally in his class and we see him easily as a top 40 prospect. Corprew reminded us of a younger Andrew White but with better athleticism and ball handling skills. While not the shooter of White, Corprew is smooth as silk and has the unique blend of skill and athleticism. He was explosive off the dribble and is extremely quick off his feet. Former Winthrop University coach Randy Peele stated the following: “ Corprew was the best prospect of the day. He is a HM player that can put the ball on the floor and has extended range. He can knock down the 3 pointer. He has really good size and athletic enough to play HM basketball.”
Unexpectedly, Corprew committed to Arkansas Little Rock after an October visit. He has since announced his decommitment from Arkansas Little Rock and now has Florida St, Indiana, VCU, Kansas St, South Carolina, Florida, getting involved.
During the 2014 Phenom National Showcase, Corprew had yet another great showing on the national level. After the event we wrote, “6’6 W Deshawn Corprew Quality Education (Winston Salem, NC) Corprew possesses a college ready frame and an unwavering demeanor and confidence on the court. He thrives in transition, locks you up on the defensive end, and then tells you about it on both ends of the court. Corprew was consistently good and made a lot of positive plays.”
After his performance at the NBA Top 100 Camp we wrote, “Corprew plays with a lot of confidence and purpose which is supported by a grittiness displayed on the court. While he has been making his mark offensively, it may be on the defensive end that he has stood out the most. Corprew plays an aggressive defense and uses his body effectively without fouling. For his overall physical strength, he has quick lateral movement that will be a huge attribute at the next level.”
Back in 2012 we stated that Corprew was a Top 40 type prospect. He has done nothing to dispel this notion. In fact, at this point, Top 40 may be a bit conservative. He makes shots, he defends the perimeter, and he is a big competitor and hard worker. Corprew’s recruitment still has another level it could go to. Take this writing to understand, he is a player the Blue Blooded heavy hitters should be looking at, even if the national recruiting analysts are sleeping on him.
