Phenom Hoop Report travelled to Kingsport, Tennessee to host the 2nd Annual Tennessee Phenom Camp. The event is held at TNT Sportsplex and the campers came from a five state radius. The players embraced the 3-dribble rule and the games showcased tremendous teamwork and making the extra pass. Now, let’s take a closer look at our camp award winners.
MVP: No. 77 6’4 2020 Tyler McKinney
It was a very productive day for the 6’4 2020 guard from Asheville Christian. As a matter of fact, he could have easily won any of five camp awards given out from Mr. Station, Mr. Hustle, and Mr. Defense. That being said, it was Tyler’s all around play that earned him the camp MVP award and rightfully so. We’re talking about a high energy guy that simply makes winning plays and makes his teammates better. His full throttle approach was contagious throughout the day. Often labelled a “glue guy.” Tyler used the platform at the Tennessee Phenom 150 to showcase he is a sure fire collegiate prospect.
Mr. Playmaker: No. 36 Hamilton Campbell (Grundy HS, Vansant, VA)
Simply stated, Hamilton Campbell put on a passing clinic. The crafty point guard has superb court vision and the ability to see the next pass before it actually develops. Play after play, Hamilton made the correct pass “on time and on target.” He made no look passes and helped create scoring opportunities for his teammates by his ability to attack gaps of the defense.
Mr. Defense: No. 92 6’10 2020 Justus Shelton (Smokey Mountain HS, Mars Hill, NC)
What’s not to like about a fundamentally sound 6’10 player who has passer friendly hands, plays with a high basketball IQ and plays within the structure of the game. That being said, Justus Shelton altered and blocked shots and dominated the glass on the defensive side of the ball. It was a tough day for opposing players to score over the length and reach.
Mr. Hustle: No. 43 6’0 2020 John Tastinger (Frankin HS, Otto, NC)
6’0 2020 John Tastinger easily lived up to the camp’s Mr. Hustle award. We’re talking about a high energy guard that plays with a high motor and full throttle approach. He gave effort on both ends of the court and played with effort the entire day. In addition, John enjoyed a solid all around performance on both ends of the court.
Mr. Station: No. 84 6’5 2020 Tyler Strong (Northwood HS, Saltville, VA)
The lengthy and skilled wing guard caught our attention from the very “get go” in stations and he carried the same hustle, intensity, and enthusiasm into the games. It’s refreshing to see young players come to camp and take as much effort and energy in the stations as the actual games, which often speaks highly about the character and talents of the player.
