Tyson Brown 6’8 185 2019 Kempsville High School (Virginia Beach VA)

Tyson is a lanky and springy stretch four type whose broad shoulders and long limbs more than compliment his 6’8 frame. He has solid mobility for a player his size and has very good footwork around the rim. Tyson looks to finally be filling out but at just 185 pounds with a very thin lower body will have to continue to add weight to his frame as he prepares to play at the next level. Not the most fluent athlete because of his dangly appearance but he looks comfortable and moves well in open space. He has good coordination, athleticism and provides versatility as a low post scoring presence and a guy who can float out to 15 feet and remain an efficient scorer. Tyson is most comfortable facing the rim and is capable of hitting the mid range jumper or putting the ball on the deck and getting to the rim. He has become a more reliable finisher able to adjust his shot in mid air on layups with good body control at various angles. He has great timing for stick backs and rebounds especially of the offensive variety. He gets off the ground quickly and effortlessly and is so long and bouncy he regularly snatches rebounds above rim level. Tyson is a very good passer and does a good job distributing the ball from the high post. His offensive skill level has always been apparent but is now complimented by more physicality and an improved motor. Tyson has a nice stroke and touch on the jumper with potential to extend his range but for now remains a reliable shooter in the middle and a great target on screen and roll scenarios because of his mobility, shot making skills going to the rim and his great hands. Defensively Tyson clearly has the length and size to be a factor as a rim protector, but his ability to defend the post and ball screens is something he has really improved on a lot from his junior campaign. He executes proper defensive principles, has good instincts and doesn’t only rely on his length. He is disruptive defensively, covers a lot of ground with his wide radius of reach, has good reflexes and lateral quickness. Tyson has impressed me a lot in team camp action in the summer as he looks primed to be that dominant paint presence I anticipated he could be. As he has filled out physically he has become more assertive and imposing and the entire package appears to be coming together and he could emerge as one of the area’s best front court players. Tyson’s recruiting has also seen a spike as he rounds out a solid summer with interest from Quinnipiac, Hartford, UMBC, East Carolina and Wheeling Jesuit. Kempsville Coach Taft Hickman who has won over 500 games as a high school coach at Potomac High School in Maryland and Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach and also coached at the collegiate level at Bowie State looks for Tyson to take on a larger role his senior season pointing to his handle and shot making skills in the mid range as areas where he provides alot of options. Look for a strong season as Tyson becomes more of a focal point of a Kempsville offense that features talented guards capable of stretching people out and giving him more room to make an impact. His footwork and skills are not in question, he certainly has the tools to play at the next level in that regard. Once he adds bulk to compliment his great length, watch out!
