Donald Hand, Jr 6’2 150 2022 Donald Hand Basketball/Team Thrill VA
Donald Hand, Jr or more affectionately known in the 757 as “DJ” is a court savvy, precocious player with a solid feel for the game. He has a long frame and long arms giving every indication he will be much taller than his Dad, former University of Virginia star and ACC legend Donald Hand. Already at 6’2 he’s well on his way. “DJ” has always played in a higher age group and demonstrates great patience and poise. His greatest asset is his elite shot making skills and great range. Has big time scoring potential with the ability to score from all over the court but gets most of his shots on the perimeter using excellent shooting mechanics, a quick fluent release and the ability to spot up and shoot the three with tremendous consistency. Has beyond the volleyball line range! DJ is a solid decision maker, shows the understanding of the game that you would expect from someone much older and more experienced. He has excellent footwork and the ability to create separation coming off screens and is always ready to shoot. He is outstanding moving off the ball and using screens, reading the defense and taking what the defense gives him. Never rushes his shot and has the patience to pass on a contested shot, move the ball and get it back in the flow of the offense. He is a smooth player who can handle the ball well, get into the lane and finish with either hand around the rim. DJ uses the threat of his shot extremely well to create shots for himself inside the arc. Very good using the ball fake to attack an over aggressive defender and bury the one or two dribble pull-up. While lauded for his three point shooting efficiency, DJ is not just a 3-point shooter. He can isolate and create separation off the dribble and is very good stepping into the mid range jumper or shooting the floater over taller defenders. Will attack the rim when he sees space and finishes very well off the glass. DJ has a solid handle, makes good use of the dribble and can run the offense in the half court, a very good passer. Also does a good job getting to the free throw line where he is an excellent free throw shooter! He defends his position and displays very good mechanics on both ends of the floor to compliment his heady court presence. His Dad trains several players; some established and others still building their basketball resume and DJ is right there working on his skill development never in awe that his workout partner might occasionally be a college standout preparing for the next level of his career. He displays great maturity on and off the court and has a workmanlike approach to his basketball and academics. A goal oriented young man who seems to bring something new to the court every time you and tournaments and he’s still just getting started!
