Matthew Nunez 6’9, 215 2021 Woodside High School, Newport News VA

Matthew’s progress from July through the start of the high school season in November was tremendous. An exciting prospect when I saw him last summer he possesses excellent length, soft shooting touch around the rim, the ability to score facing the rim and comfort as well with his back to the basket. Matthew became much more assertive and of course, as his effectiveness increased so did his confidence and aggressiveness. He can spot up and hit the three-point basket or score the jumper stepping to the pass and squaring to the rim. Matthew can also post up and score over either shoulder; can hit the hook shot with both hands! As he continues to get stronger and learn to play through contact, he is going to be a dominant post. He is a very good shot blocker, good timing, and reaction. Became more of a shot blocking presence as the season progressed. Matthew is a very good rebounder, boxes out regularly and keeps the ball high. He is an excellent passer and has a good feel. When doubled he shows good presence to avoid trap situations, he uses the dribble sparingly but wisely. Shows promise as a pick and pop type given his ability to hit the jumper. Matthew’s mother played high school basketball in Indiana so he has the DNA. He has the opportunity to develop into a multi-positional player given his quick development both physically and fundamentally and his high basketball IQ. Matthew’s high school coach is former Woodside High School and University of Arkansas star Stefan Welsh who calls Matthew the “hardest and most consistent worker he has ever been around”. “Matthew has the elite work ethic that it takes to play this game for a long time and make money doing it.” – Coach Stefan Welsh, Woodside High School
