6’4” 2019 Marten Maide
Carmel Christian (NC) / Team Charlotte 17s
By Jamie Shaw

Marten Maide is stone cold, his expression does not change. Just looking hat him you would not know if his team was up 20, in a highly contested game or down 20. But that expression means you know the competitor in Maide is locked in.

Of course this competitive nature Maide possesses is what makes him such a supremely talented basketball player. After watching his performance in an event of our last year we wrote “If Bill Rafferty were commentating a game Maide was playing in, the term “Onions” would be used regularly. The kid is just made of steel with ice water in his veins. He sees the floor well and shoots with deep range. Maide also gets into the paint where he is a crafty finisher. Very productive and a winner.”

It is hard to ignore Maide’s basketball acumen. He has a high IQ and sees the floor very well. Of course, so many people will call him a shooter at first sight, and he is…He can really, really shoot the ball. But his game goes so much further. He is crafty in the lane and has good length with explosion that will sneak up and bang on you. His game is smooth, he pads stats on both ends of the floor and does so with an even keel demeanor.

After his breakout performance at the prestigious North Carolina Top 80 event we wrote about Maide’s diverse skill set,“Maide was one of the best two-way players at camp, frequently making his presence known at all times, Marten Maide. He’s an off-guard with a ton of grittiness, refusing to back down from any assignment on either end of the floor. Offensively, Maide is a three-level scorer that loves to shoot the three-pointer and rightfully so, as he doesn’t seem to miss many. He plays within the teams’ offense and can heat up in a hurry. Simply put, Maide is as tough as they come; when you factor in his motor, strength and speed, you have a guy that is very difficult to contain. Defensively, he uses his underrated quickness and IQ to stick to opposing guards like glue; he has the ability to lockdown two or three positions well. Next in his development process is tightening up his handle; he’s a nice distributor, but an improved handle would allow him to create a wide variety of looks.”

In AAU Maide is coached by Jeff McInnis, in high school Maide is coached by Byron Dinkins. Both players played multiple years in the NBA and have accumulated quite the resume as coaches. McInnis directs the Team Charlotte program who has quickly become one of the flagship teams on the entire Under Armour Association Circuit. Dinkins has led his program to seven straight NCHSAA state championship games. Needless to say, Maide is getting taught.

It is clear that the high academic Maide is a player on the rise. Currently he carries offers from the likes of Appalachian St, Mercer, Charlotte and Houston Baptist. Expect more to continue down the pipeline. He is stone cold, and those guys tend to translate highly at the next level.
