The talents run rich here in North Carolina and new names continue to pop up. One name that certainly isn’t new to us at Phenom Hoops and we are high on is 2026 6’9 Heimir Helgason, a talent that is starting to see his stock rise this season.
The talented prospect popped up back at the NC Sophomore 40, where he caught our yes quickly and we had this to say:
“Helgason is a long, wiry forward who will be coming to North Carolina this year from Iceland, and he is a player that you should really keep an eye on. Phenom Hoops had been introduced to him before the event, and after checking out more film on him, we couldn’t wait to see what he could do against others in his class. Helgason didn’t disappoint, as he was able to show tremendous flashes in his game, and once he adjusts more to the game and adds strength, he will be a name college coaches will want to know.”
And then we recently wrote about him back in May, as he continued to develop into a prospect worthy of noting: https://www.phenomhoopreport.com/starting-to-catch-eyes-2026-heimir-helgason/
Now, we sit here today with Helgason holding multiple offers and earning his biggest offer yet from Nebraska. Phenom Hoops spoke to him about the offer to get his thoughts and more on his recruitment.
Phenom: What was it like to get that Nebraska offer?
Helgason: It was great. They came to see me in October and have been in consistent contact. I really like them.
Phenom: How did you hear about the offer?
Helgason: Coach Fred Hoiberg called me. We talked about my team, their team, etc. Then he offered me. Was an exciting moment.
Phenom: What did he say when he offered?
Helgason: He said we really like what we see and have been following you closely all year and want to officially offer you.
Phenom: What do you know about the program and like about it early on?
Helgason: I love their facilities from what I see online. I really like that Coach Hoiberg played and coached in the NBA. And I also love that he likes shooters.
Phenom: Do you have any plans of making a visit there?
Helgason: Absolutely. Nothing officially planned but I def plan on visiting prob in the summer or right after. Whenever they want me to come.
Phenom: Who else has been coming your way these days outside of Nebraska? Any new interests?
Helgason: Belmont and Wyoming. A few others as well. UCF and SMU have been in touch a little bit as well.
Phenom: Any schools of high interest would you say?
Helgason: Nebraska. They are in touch a lot with me. I like that.
