With the Class of 2025 starting to wrap up (but there are still plenty of names college programs should be looking at), we are starting to look at the Class of 2026 here in North Carolina. One player that I find incredibly interesting to watch and full of potential is 2026 6’9 Heimir Helgason out of Asheville School.
When you watch his game, his blend of potential and overall skillset is quite impressive. With his size at 6’9, his fluidity, and his ability to be an effective option in so many areas, Helgason offers a lot as a matchup problem and I believe that he is just scratching the surface of what he could potentially be. Helgason with his size allows him to be an effective option down low in the paint, as he moves quickly, has a strong feel in how to operate, and can finish at the rim or with touch down low. That doesn’t mention his impact on the boards as well as showing his athleticism in helping control the paint defensively. But what makes him so fascinating with his game is how he can stretch the floor; he is comfortable facing up with his mid-range game, knocking down shots, or putting it on the deck to create. Helgason even is comfortable and reliable from behind the arc, getting to his spots and displaying a fluid, confident release from three. He reads the defense well in finding ways to score, making opponents pay from the perimeter but also being skilled enough to create and attack. His mobility and fluidity also come into play in transition, beating a lot of his opponents down the court and creating easy opportunities. Again though, there are still areas he is working on and developing, as well as getting stronger. But one can’t deny that the upside with this young man’s game is there, which is why he has been and should be trending as a national prospect in the area.
Right now, he holds offers from Nebraska, Illinois State, East Carolina, Chattanooga, Stetson, Wyoming, and Hampton, but I believe that list should only continue to grow and grow quickly.
