Back in Texas, a new name to start keeping track of is 2024 6’9 Isaiah Kalala from W.T. White High School. A player that has taken his lumps and has worked hard to where he is today, announced last week that he had earned his first offer while others have been showing more interest his way.

We dive into it all with Kalala, as he talks about the offer from Mississippi State, more about his game, and more of the latest with schools.

Phenom: How's your excitement about the upcoming season'
Kalala: Everything has been going well this offseason.  I've been working on all aspects of my game and we also have been working as a team.  Some excitement about the upcoming season is just to show people what I am capable of. It's going to be basically my first year on varsity, so I just want to make some noise this season. Also excited to win a lot of games this year.  People think we aren't making the playoffs because of our tough schedule. But we will prove them wrong.

Phenom: How would you best describe your game these days' How do you like to operate'
Kalala: The best way I would describe my game these days is an aggressive finisher down low. I'm a threat when left open in the mid-range and three; also a face-up guy. The way I like to attack offensively is by getting the ball at the high post, lost post, or short corner.  I face up and then like to work from there. If the defender sags off, I automatically shoot it. I also run the pick and pop for threes and mid-range shots. I'm also faster than people at my position, so every time we get a rebound I run the floor to get easy dunks. I also crash the boards for easy putbacks. I can also guard 1-5, so switching isn't a problem for me.

Phenom: Had a great week getting that first offer from Mississippi State. What was that moment like for you'
Kalala: It was an unreal moment. My family and I were tearing up, I would have never thought I'd pick that up. As a freshman, I got cut from the C team, so I played football. As a sophomore, I mostly played JV. So, I was proud of myself and motivated even more because I have come a long way.

Phenom: How did you hear about the offer' And what do you know about the program'
Kalala: Coach Anwar called me and announced that I was getting offered. I know that Mississippi State is an elite program that builds great players and plays elite competition.

Phenom: What did the staff say when they offered you'
Kalala: 'We would like to offer you. Hope you take us seriously.'

Phenom: What other schools have been showing interest your way'
Kalala: I've talked a little bit to SMU, Colorado State, Colorado, and TCU.

Phenom: What have they been saying in general your way'
Kalala: Just casual conversations and telling me they are going to watch me and keep up with me.
