Over the weekend with Phenom Hoops, we had a terrific event going on with the Phenom Summer Showcase which brought a few AAU teams but also a few high school programs to the floor. One team that we certainly were excited to get an early glimpse of was Freddy Johnson’s Greensboro Day Bengals, as they are looking to gear up for a tremendous month with high school team camps and prepare for the upcoming high school season.
The Bengals will certainly look different this year, with several key seniors now taking their talents to the next level but GDS will have one key returner in 2023 Jaydon Young as he looks to be one of the clear leaders on the floor that we saw at the event.
Young, who is already ranked as one of the top prospects in his class, came out strong to lead the Bengals to a 3-0 weekend and it was clear that he should be in for a big season with his team. Young continues to look bigger and stronger, showing his natural instincts and feel for the game, and his ability to make plays. He was very useful in showing that he can be a playmaker with the ball in his hands, scoring off the dribble and creating for himself, getting and finishing around or at the basket, and also his smooth shot-making ability from multiple levels. That is just on the offensive end; on the defensive end, he continues to be a key piece in locking down opponents and guarding multiple positions. There is no doubt about it, Young showcased his ability to impact the court on both sides very well.
And now, with several key players now gone from last year’s team, Young is going to be relied on to instantly step up and be one of the go-to guys for Greensboro Day. With how talented he is, Young has the chance to only make a bigger statement this high school season as he hopes to give the Bengals another state title this upcoming season.
