Saturday afternoon, Florida State, Maryland, or Syracuse was going to land a big commitment for their 2020 recruiting class, both literally and figuratively. The 7-footer was one of the top unsigned seniors in North Carolina and a hidden gem that high major programs started to jump on late.
At noon, he announced on his social media that Florida State would be the place for him, a program that has a proven record of producing big-time talents with tremendous size.
Ballard is one that grew into and developed his game over this past season. He not only improved his offensive game but as well as being a defensive presence in the paint. He moves really well for someone with his size and frame, has a nice touch and a continuing development in his offensive game. Ballard also gets on the glass incredibly well on both ends, creating second chance opportunities offensively and racking up the boards on the defensive end.
At the Phenom HoopState Championship, he showed it all. Rick Lewis has this to say about what he saw.
“Quincy impressed us at the inaugural Phenom HoopState Championship. We’re talking about a long, strong, and athletic true 7’0 who has outstanding defensive instincts. He plays with his arms and hands fully extended, not to mention he has impeccable timing on blocking shots. In addition, Ballard has passer-friendly hands and a nice touch around the rim. More importantly, we were impressed with his mechanics, form, and touch on free throws, which is a rare quality for a player his size.”

PHR: What made Florida State the place for you in the end?
Ballard: “Florida State has all the special ingredients I need to be great. The situation is ideal and puts me in a great position.”
PHR: What did you like about the Seminoles that eventually put them over the top?
Ballard: “The coaching staff really paid attention and knew exactly how I would fit with the team. Coach Hamilton has a great track record. I also feel I can trust him and that is important.”
PHR: How do you think you will be able to make an impact on the program early on?
Ballard: “Every new player has a chance to change up the game by their presence. I believe I will bring that energy and give our competitors a run for it. As a team, we will only be much stronger.”
PHR: What will it be like playing in the ACC, on the big stage?
Ballard: “Wow, that will be very exciting. I’ve been waiting for this.”
PHR: Overall, what has this process been like for you and now that it has come to an end, what will you be focusing on now?
Ballard: “It has been exciting and tough altogether. My top schools were fantastic options and so hard to decide. I appreciate the opportunity with them all. My focus is on my family staying staff during this unusual situation. I will live this new normal until we simply can get back to normal. At the same time, preparing for my next step in life.”
