This weekend, private schools will play their final game of the postseason. The matchups have been decided as each of the state championship games will be held in Charlotte. We will take a closer look at each of the four games set to take place, starting with the 1A contest between Victory Christian and Crossroads Christian.

The folks in charge of private school seeding did a terrific job since the top two seeds will meet in the championship across all four NCISAA classifications. In this contest, Crossroads Christian makes its first state title appearance in hopes of upsetting top-seeded Victory Christian. The Colts are coming off a notable season primarily led by sophomores (Kobe Edgerton and Ely Phillips) and juniors (Josh Smith and Sean Smith). Despite being a younger group, they’ve won each of their playoff games by double digits. Their real challenge comes in this upcoming contest. If the Colts’ balanced attack can continue finding success, it should make for a close, competitive battle.

Meanwhile, the Kings have been heavy favorites throughout the high school season. They might have a similar record to their opponent, but most of Victory Christian’s losses came to some of the top teams throughout the state (Concord Academy, Carmel Christian, Christ School, Legacy Early College, Stuart Hall, Charlotte Country Day, Davidson Day, Ambassador Christian, Providence Day, Winston-Salem Christian). Justyn Whitfield might be the most reliable producer in the classification. Carlos Marshall’s size/physical tools make him an overwhelming interior piece. Abubakar Cham is a college-level big man with the ability to finish, rebound, and make plays defensively. Guys like Chrisitan Petty and Panos Kalkavouras provide quality production within their respective roles as senior leaders.

Both teams are deserving. Crossroads Christian has certainly outperformed expectations, while Victory Christian has maintained their status as the top team in 1A throughout the year. Anything could happen, but it’s difficult to see the battle-tested Kings falling short in this one.
