8th Annual North Carolina Phenom 150 Evaluation Camp: Part 4

In today’s issue, we will take a look at Part 4 of our series of player evaluations from the 8th Annual NC Phenom 150 Camp.

Player: Muhammed Muhammed
Hometown: Durham, NC
School: Durham Riverside
Height: 6’3
Class: 2015
Evaluation: Muhammed is a promising young freshman with good potential and upside. He has an excellent attitude and has a tremendous work ethic on the basketball court. More importantly, Muhammed is a fierce competitor. He plays extremely hard and competes on each possession. He has a nice blend of athleticism and skill and is a solid all around player. He has a good midrange jumper and can step out and knock down 3’s on a consistent basis. He has good length and can use his speed and quickness to get into the lane with relative ease. He has smoothness to his game and could be a future star in the class of 2015 in North Carolina.

Player: Derrick Bass
Hometown: Timberlake, NC
School: Person HS
Height: 6’5
Class: 2013
Evaluation: Derrick has good athleticism and length that can transition into the next level. He has a great attitude and work ethic and is an excellent rebounder. He is the ultimate team player, in the fact that he does not demand the ball, but has a knack for getting rebounds and loose balls. He has good passing skills and is very unselfish player. While he is solid offensively, his biggest strength may be his ability to play hardnosed defense. He uses his length appropriately by getting his long arms up to contest opposing player’s jumper. The next step in his development is to work on his perimeter skills to be an effective player at the D1 level.

Player:  James Hempfield
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
School: Raleigh Broughton
Height: 6’6
Class: 2013
Evaluation: James is a fundamentally sound basketball player with good basketball IQ. He plays extremely hard on both ends of the court and is the ultimate team player.  James is a hustle player that seems to get a lot of loose ball and rebounds.  On the offensive end, James has solid mechanics on his shot although improvements can be made on a quicker release. James has average athleticism, but it will be his continued work ethic and desire that will be able to push him into the D1 category. At the end of the day, James is very coachable and plays the game the right way. The next step in his development is to increase foot speed and lateral quickness.  With the correct work ethic, James can be a solid D1 prospect.

Player:  Chandler Peraldo
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: Northwest Guilford
Height: 5’9
Class: 2015
Evaluation: Chandler is a fundamentally sound and has a tremendous work ethic. He has a great understanding of the game. Offensively, he has a nice arsenal of advanced ball handling skills and is very crafty with the ball. He has solid shooting mechanics and is a dead eye shooter from the 3 point line. While mostly noted an advanced ball handler and shooter, Chandler made an impression with his hustle and hard work on the defensive end of the ball. Chandler has good speed and foot speed and this helped him immensely by applying pressure defense. He was more assertive on the defensive end of the floor and showcased his overall well balanced game. He has 4 years of high school ahead of him and what level he plays will be determined by his continued work ethic and desire.

Player:  Jalen Barnes
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
School: Wakefield
Height: 5’11
Class: 2013
Evaluation: Barnes was one of the surprise players at the event. Jalen has excellent speed and quickness and is tremendous in the open court. He has good court vision and has no trouble getting into the lane. Jalen has a good combination of speed, athleticism and overall fundamentals that could make him a potential D1 prospect. He does sport a nice midrange pull up jumper and is adequate from the 3 point line. He has outstanding ball handling skills, but he also makes a big impact on the defensive end of the court. He has quick feet and excellent lateral quickness. The next step in his development is to continue to becoming a well rounded player and getting stronger and becoming a better shooter from the perimeter.

Player:  Steve Robinson
Hometown: Mebane, NC
School: Eastern Alamance
Height: 5’7
Class: 2014
Evaluation:  Steve is simply a blur on the court. He has amazing speed, quickness and overall athleticism. He has a great attitude and work ethic to go along with his solid decision making and basketball knowledge. He is a fierce competitor on the court and has the heart of a lion. While he may be small in stature, he will not back down from any challenge. He uses his freakish athleticism in a positive manner and has a solid offensive arsenal. He can get by any defender and finish at the rim or utilize his midrange pull up jumper and can even knock down the 3 ball. He is an absolute pest on defense. The next stage in his development is to continue to get bigger and stronger. He has 3 more years of high school basketball and could develop into a D1 prospect.

Player: Alston Thompson
Hometown: Durham, NC
School: Durham Hillside
Height: 6’5
Class: 2015
Evaluation:  Aslton is a talented young freshman that has good length and athleticism. He has a good attitude and is a solid team player. He does a good job of getting out in transition. He has a solid all around game, but it is apparent that is skill set has completely matched up against his potential and athleticism. That being said, Alston has the potential to be a legit D1 prospect with continued work ethic, desire and determination. The next step for him to get physically stronger and continue to work on his skill sets.

Player: Brayden Masten
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
School: RJ Reynolds
Height: 6’8
Class: 2013
Evaluation:  Brayden has the physical intangibles for be a legit D1 prospect. He has a good attitude and solid work ethic, but the biggest attribute is his ability to shoot the basketball. He is a 6’8 PF that has good mechanics on his jump shot. Brayden enjoyed a solid camp, but what you see now is not the finished product he could be by his senior season. Brayden does have good fundamentals and a high basketball IQ. The next step in his development is to play with more intensity and urgency. When you’re 6’8 and have a good shooting touch, the sky is the limit regards to potential

Player: Cody Hylton
Hometown: Colfax, NC
School: Northwest Guilford
Height: 6’3
Class: 2013
Evaluation: Cody is a hard working fundamentally sound player with a high basketball IQ. His biggest strength is his ability to shoot with outstanding range. Without question, Cody may be one of the best 3 point shooters in the state for the class of 2013. His mechanics on his shot is excellent and is at his best in a catch and shoot situation. The next step in his development is to create his own shot off the dribble and improve his foot speed and lateral quickness.

Player: Terrence Wells
Hometown: Cary, NC
School: Apex
Height: 5’9
Class: 2014
Evaluation: Terrence is a promising young PG that has a blend of athleticism and fundamentals. He has a great attitude and work ethic. Terrence has outstanding quickness and does possess good court vision. He does a good job of keeping his head up on his dribble. In addition, he has good mechanics on his jump shot. Terrence competes extremely hard on the defensive end of the court. That being said, Terrence is definitely a young prospect to watch on the recruiting trail. While he is small in stature, he has 3 years of growth and maturity in front of him. He has the physical and basketball knowledge to be a potential D1 prospect.

Player: Tyquan Bitting
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
School: Mt. Tabor
Height: 6’7
Class: 2013
Evaluation:  Tyquan is a long and athletic PF that has a great attitude and work ethic. Tyquan has a huge upside and plays under control and has a good understanding of the game. He has a solid midrange game, and has good footwork in the paint. He can post up on the low block or step out and hit the face up jumper from the elbow. On the defensive end of the floor, Tyquan did a good job of boxing out and getting his up to contest shots. He does have good length and hopefully Tyquan can have a breakout year at Mt. Tabor. Without question, he has D1 potential and just needs more confidence on the high school front. He is definitely a player for schools in the Big South and Southern Conference should monitor his progress.

Player: Steven Williams
Hometown: High Point, NC
School: High Point Christian
Height: 5’10
Class: 2014
Evaluation: Steven is a solid PG that has good fundamentals and high basketball IQ. He has good court vision and is a true pass first floor general. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to play hard and compete on each possession. He has a good attitude and work ethic and is very solid on the defensive end of the floor. He has good speed and lateral quickness. The next step in his development is to get physically bigger and stronger.

Player:  David Belfield
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School: Charlotte Catholic
Height: 6’2
Class: 2013
Evaluation: David has a great attitude and work ethic. He has outstanding fundamentals and a high basketball IQ and can play either guard position. David plays hard and loves competing and it clearly shows up in his effort and desire. David also understands how to play the right way and play within the team structure. He is very unselfish and gets as much joy as making the extra pass as scoring himself. The next step in his development is to develop additional ball handling skills to make the transition to PG at the next level easier. His basic skill set and understanding of the game should make him a solid D1 prospect.

Player: Logan Evans
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
School: Raleigh Wakefield
Height: 6’6
Class: 2013
Evaluation: Logan is an extremely long and athletic wing that can play on the interior on in the post. You can tell he probably plays the post on his high school team as he has good interior moves. He has a great attitude and work ethic and has a good understanding of the game. Currently, his defense is more advanced than his offense and has the length and athleticism to defend at the D1 level. His offense is still a work in progress and will need to develop a midrange game to his arsenal, plus it will be important for him to create his own shot off the dribble. That being said, Logan has the desire and determination to be a really good player with continued hard work

8th Annual North Carolina Phenom 150 Evaluation Camp: Part 3

In today’s issue, we will dig into more Division I prospects that attended the NC Phenom 150 Camp on Saturday, October 15th, 2011.

Player: 5’11Ria’n Holland
Hometown: Hope Mills, NC
School: South View
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: The opinions varied on Holland from various scouting services in attendance whether to peg Holland as a true PG or SG. The reason for the varying opinions was due to the fact that Holland is a “lights out” shooter. We are talking about one of the best pure shooters in his class. Holland can shoot off the dribble at the PG position or simply move without the ball to get open. It’s refreshing to see a young player know how to play without the ball and “do his work early” for getting his shot off. This young man needs little to no room to get his shot off. He has a quick release and can get his shot off on taller and more athletic defenders. He is fundamentally sound and has a high basketball IQ and has serious D1 potential.

Player: 5’10 Logan Jackson
Hometown: Waxhaw, NC
School: Marvin Ridge
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: Jackson is the consummate PG who is highly skilled and fundamentally sound. He is a superb floor general that has tremendous court vision and is an excellent passer. He is really crafty and knows how to changes speed extremely well in the open court. He has solid speed and quickness to overcome his lack of size. He had total control of his team and his teammates looked for him on most of the outlet passes off defensive rebounds which is a testament to leadership on the court. On the defensive side of the court, Jackson was active and assertive. He has outstanding on the ball defense and has quick hands.

Player: 5’8 TJ Robinson
Hometown: Fayetteville, NC
School: Fayetteville Christian
Grade: 10 (Class 2014)
Evaluation: The best way to describe Robinson is “jitterbug.” Robinson has superb quickness and tremendous foot speed. He is excellent in transition as he weaves in and out of defensive pressure. In addition to his overall speed, Robinson is an excellent passer and is really good by making “snap passes” off the dribble. Defensively, he is able to use his undersized frame as advantage as he applied great on the ball pressure defense. He is like a “nat” that keeps pestering the offensive ball handler.  Robinson is rather young and could easily add some size in the next few years. That being said, he is one to keep on your D1 radar.

Player: 6’7 Zane Waterman
Hometown: Kernersville, NC
School: Glenn HS
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: Waterman was also a pleasant surprise since he had little to no hype or publicity coming into the camp, but his high intensity motor was impressive to say the least. He played all 3 camp  games like he had something to prove and his aggressive and assertive hustle plays earned him a lot of respect from various scouts in attendance. He has “sneaky” athleticism and does have a nice bounce to his step. He attacked the rim relentlessly and threw down some nasty dunks through traffic. In addition, he sported a nice mid range game and if he has a successful junior season, you should see a pike in his recruitment. Without question, Waterman has D1 potential.

Player: 6’5 Josh Mellette
Hometown: Sanford, NC
School: Southern Lee
Grade: 12 (Class 2012)
Evaluation: Mellette is a rather long and athletic wing that is excellent in transition. He attacks the rim with vengeance and authority and gets high above the rim for some thunderous dunks. In addition to excelling in the open court, Mellette is a throwback to the term “garbage player” as he always seems to be at the right place and right place for loose balls and put back points off the offensive board. Defensively, he uses his length and closes out correctly by getting his long wingspan up to disrupt the offensive shooter. Mellette plays hard and is a Mr. Hustle guy on the court. With Mellette, you get a hardnosed competitor that will battle you constantly on both ends of the court.

Player: 6’6 Derek Barnes
Hometown: Hickory, NC
School: Hickory HS
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: Barnes is a really good looking WF that truly understands the game. He is fundamentally sound and has a high basketball IQ, but his “meal ticket” is his ability to shoot the ball.  He is a proficient shooter with outstanding range from the perimeter and beyond the 3 point line. His shot is “textbook” and you can easily see countless hours were spent in the gym perfecting his smooth shooting touch. In addition, he plays well off the ball and moves and positions himself for shots coming off ball screens or making “V Cuts” to get open. Defensively, he was solid all day and understands the basic principles of man to man defense.

Player: 6’7 Jordan Jones
Hometown: Durham, NC
School: Durham Riverside
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: Jones is another long and agile player with a tremendous wingspan. While he is effective in transition, one of his biggest attributes is his ability to handle and pass the basketball. He has really good court vision and makes lead bounce passes off the dribble with zip and accuracy. He plays above the rim and rebounds with passion. He has impeccable timing and goes strong and high for rebounds. On the defensive end of the floor, he can cause problems due to his length. He has good lateral foot speed and the next step in his development is adding strength to his frame. He has a lot of physical intangibles to become a solid D1 prospect.

Player: 6’4 Ricky Council
Hometown: Durham, NC
School: Northern Durham
Grade: 10 (Class 2014)
Evaluation: Council attended the 2011 Dave Telep Carolina Challenge and is a very long framed player that can play on the perimeter or on the interior. He showcased his ability on Saturday to consistently knock down perimeter shots with accuracy and precision. Council has the unique blend of athleticism and skill which is missing from many young players today, but more importantly Council’s biggest attribute may be his desire to play hard, compete and hustle on each and every possession. Like the old saying, “this young man does not take plays off.” He plays with an urgency and desire that is fun to watch. He is box out and band with bigger defenders and uses his athleticism and quick bounce to secure rebounds over taller players, but the biggest play was watching Council drive for a loose ball that was going out of bounds. Let’s be honest, you don’t see that often in camp setting. In addition, Council scored well but he did it within the team structure and didn’t try to manufacture his own shot. Without question, Council has the chance to be a very good player in high school and at the next level.

8th Annual North Carolina Phenom 150 Evaluation Camp: Part 2

In today’s issue, we will look at the next group of talented young players that attended the 8th Annual North Carolina Phenom 150 Camp.

Player: 6’10 Thor Emilsson
Hometown: Winston-Salem (Foreign exchange student)
School: Forsyth Country Day
Grade: 12 (Class: 2012)
Evaluation: Emilsson is a big body post player that is fundamentally sound. He is not overly athletic, but does use his body rather well on the interior. He runs the well and does possess a nice drop step move to the basket. He does a very good job of boxing out on the defensive end of the floor. Schools in the Big South and Southern Conference should definitely monitor his progress for FCDS.

Player: 6’7 Mark Pollock
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School: Charlotte Catholic
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: Pollock’s biggest attribute is his ability to knock down shots. He has excellent fundamentals and shooting technique and has a high release point. He has great rotation on the ball and he is deadly from midrange and can also stretch out the defense with his outstanding range from the 3 point area. He is fundamentally sound and has a high basketball IQ. He recently received his first offer from Presbyterian College and look for that list to grow. He has been a regular at the NC Phenom 150 camp and he continues to improve and get better.  He is player that should be recruited heavily by Southern Conference and Big South schools. In addition, he is an excellent student and high character young man.

Player: 6’6 Quayshad Williams
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: Greensboro Day School
Grade: 12 (Class 2012)
Evaluation: Williams has been saddled with a foot injury for part of the summer and early fall. While he has to work his way back into shape, Williams enjoyed a stellar camp. Although he is undersized at the post position, he worked extremely hard in the paint getting open. Fortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to coach Williams 2 years in AAU and know he has potential to be really good. He has “soft” hands which is essential for a PF or post player. He is always moving without the ball and is quite active on the boards. One thing for sure, Williams doesn’t mind banging on the inside and mixing it up. In addition, Williams has enjoyed the opportunity to play for Greensboro Day and one of the best high school coaches in the business with Coach Freddie Johnson. That alone will tell you he is coachable and knows how to play the game the right way. Williams looked like he had something to prove and he looked like the Quayshad of old. I look for big things this coming season for him.  He should be a target for Big South and Southern Conference Schools.

Player: 6’3 JT Miller
Hometown: Clinton, NC
School: Clinton
Grade: 12 (Class 2012)
Evaluation: The undeniable adjective that attaches itself to Miller’s game is explosive. Without question, Miller is a big time athlete who plays above the rim. Miller showed solid ball handling capabilities in both the half court and in transition. He has really good end to end speed and absolutely loves to attack the basket. The next step in his development is to develop a consistent mid range jumper. That being said, Miller plays with passion and purpose and is Mr. Hustle on both ends of the court.

Player: 6’6 Trey Chapman
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: High Point Wesleyan
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: step Chapman recently transferred to High Point Wesleyan. He is a tremendous athletic WF that has excellent length and bounce that enables him to play above the rim. He is like a gazelle in transition and uses his length and athleticism in attacking the basket. He is very active on both ends of the floor and can be a disruptive force on the defensive end. Chapman played with a lot of energy and hustle which is refreshing in camp settings. The next in Chapman’s game is to utilize a midrange jumper. He has the physical tools to be a really good player in high school and at the next level.

Player: 6’7 Jackson Kent
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: High Point Christian
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: Kent recently transferred to High Point Christian and reclassed to the 2013 class. Kent is another regular at the NC Phenom 150 camp and I’m totally impressed with his improvement over the past year. Basically known as a “dead eye” from the 3 point territory, he has worked hard on his ball handling and passing skills and has really raised his level of play. He even played PG at times at camp. Kent is excellent in transitions and with improved strength and quickness, he is more comfortable attacking the basket and finishing well. He has always been a fundamentally sound player with a high basketball IQ and is a legit D1 prospect.

Player: 6’8 Thaxter Spruill
Hometown: Clinton, NC
School: Clinton
Grade: 10 (Class 2014)
Evaluation: Spruill is an extremely long and thin “run jump” athlete! He has an enormous wingspan and looks like he could grow even more. He is excellent in transition and also has “soft hands.” Offensively, getting out in transition and running the court is his game, but on occasions Spruill was able to post up and utilize a jump hook shot. Defensively, he can be an absolute terror by blocking and altering shots. The next step in his development is adding strength and girth. He has a tremendous upside and is oozing with potential. It should be fun watching his development over the next few years and mid major schools should find a road atlas to Clinton, NC to monitor his progress.

Player: 6’5 Matthew Madigan
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
School: Mt. Tabor
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: According to Coach Mike Muse of Mt. Tabor, Madigan will be transferring to play for him this coming school year. The southpaw is known for his ability to put points on the scoreboard and he didn’t disappoint at the NC Phenom 150.  He does have a “sneaky” athleticism with his hops, but the biggest attribute for Madigan is his fundamentals and high basketball IQ. He simply knows how to play the game the right way. In addition, he plays extremely hard and doesn’t take plays off and should be a priority for schools in the Big South or Southern Conference. He is also an excellent student.

Player: 5’11 James Daniels III
Hometown: Hampton, VA
School: Phoebus
Grade: 11 (Class 2013)
Evaluation: “J Byrd” is a slick and ball handling wizard that can wow you with his skills. He has a tremendous arsenal of offensive moves with the basketball and is truly a scoring PG. (Not many people would beat him one on one) Daniels has good speed and quickness and knows how to change speeds in the half court and then knows how to accelerate in the open court. The next step in his development is improving his shot selection at times, but is a great looking prospect with promising skills and abilities.

Player: 6’7 Stavian Allen
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
School: Word of God
Grade: 10 (Class 2014)
Evaluation: Allen is another long and athletic WF in the class of 2014. He has a nice wingspan and is excellent in transition. He did a tremendous job of running the lanes and finishing above the rim and had some nice thunderous dunks as well.  Allen may separate himself from others at his position with his solid ball handling and passing skills. Without question, he does need to get stronger, but his young man has a promising future. He sports a quick first step to the basket and gets there with relative ease. The majority of his moves seem effortless as he enjoys a fluidness and smoothness to his game.

Player: 6’7 Robert Brown
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
School: Millbrook
Grade: 9 (Class 2015)
Evaluation: Simply put, please go ahead and put this young man in your memory bank or “SIM CARD.” He’s 6’7, young, athletic and loves to run the court! He got out in transition and had some big time dunks, but played with passion and intensity on both ends of the court. While he may be somewhat raw offensively, he does get after it on the defensive end of the court. In addition, Brown has “soft” hands and does have a huge upside with his athleticism and desire to play hard.

Player: 6’2 Justice Cuthbertson
Hometown: Thomasville, NC
School: High Point Westchester
Grade: 10 (Class 2014)
Evaluation: Cuthbertson recently transferred to High Point Westchester and reclassed to the 10th grade. That being said, he has good size and strength for a combination guard. He plays extremely hard and doesn’t take any plays off and was outstanding in his perimeter shooting. He simply enjoyed a stellar camp performance. Cuthbertson worked equally work on the defensive end of the court and played with passion and emotion. He definitely set out to prove a point and his play was outstanding.

8th Annual North Carolina Phenom 150 Evaluation Camp: Part 1

The 8th Annual North Carolina Phenom 150 Basketball Evaluation Camp took place Saturday, October 15th, 2011 at the Gateway YWCA in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Each year, we uncover some of the top young prospects in the region. This year was no exception as 216 players participated in this regional event.

Player: 5’11 Andrew Rowsey
Hometown: Lexington, VA
School: Rockbridge
Grade: 11 (Class: 2013)
Evaluation: Andrew Rowsey enjoyed an absolutely stellar performance at the NC Phenom 150 Camp. Last year, Rowsey was nationally known as an undersized shooting guard, but within the past year has worked extremely hard to become a true PG. With his performance, we can honestly say “Mission Accomplished.” Rowsey has a swagger and confidence factor that is unequalled by his peers. Once he stepped onto the court, he demanded the ball and quickly took complete command of the game. He was excellent in dribble penetration and kicking out to open teammates and definitely made his teammates better. Throughout the day, he was constantly knocking down jumpers and made an equal impression on the defensive end of the floor. He accepted all challenges and was one of the favorites by all the scouting services in attendance. He came into the camp looking to “prove his value,” and he did exactly that. We believe he is on the verge of being a top 100 player and schools in the MM+ should definitely be recruiting this young man.

Player: 6’6 Caleb & Cody Martin
Hometown: Mocksville, NC
School: Davie County
Grade: 10 (Class: 2014)
Evaluation: Caleb and his twin brother Cody came into the camp as two of the hottest prospects in the country for the class of 2014. Both of them already have several ACC offers and the talented wing duo have a complete fluidness and smoothness to their game. They are highly skilled wings that do a little bit of everything well. They have good size, athleticism, but it is their overall skill set that separates them from their peers. They are fundamentally sound and have a high basketball IQ. Both of them have outstanding ball handling skills and have a soft shooting touch from the 3 point line. They also have excellent court vision and they thrive in the open court. They are team players and are extremely unselfish. Both are multi-dimensional players and are without question HM+ prospects.

Player: 6’3 Patrick “Microwave” Rooks
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School: Charlotte, NC
Grade: 11 (Class: 2013)
Evaluation: Coming into the camp, Rooks was nationally known as one of the top shooting guard in his class. Rooks has already verbally committed to Clemson of the ACC and it looks like they have a player with is still improving and putting his finishing touch on his high school resume. His jump shot is simply “textbook.” He has excellent fundamentals, elevation, lift, extension and follow- through. He has tremendous range and he has worked hard in the off season on his ball handling and passing. He elevated his game at camp and has become a better all around player. He will no longer be known as just another shooter.

Player: 6’6 Andrew White
Hometown: Chester, VA
School: The Miller School
Grade: 12 (Class: 2012)
Evaluation: Andrew White is a consensus top 75 player nationally and much has been written and reported on his improvement over the spring and summer. He currently has offers than a kid has on Halloween. He is entertaining offers from Kansas, Texas, Louisville, NC State and others. The talented WG already sports a college ready frame and a silky smooth jump shot. He has a beautiful release on his jumper and has outstanding range. That being said, he made an unofficial visit to NC State earlier in the day and drove to Winston-Salem to participate in his 4th NC Phenom 150 Camp. While his performance was solid, it was not the usual performance we were accustomed to seeing during the summer.

Player: 6’9 Kovacevic Dusan
Hometown: Rabun Gap, GA
School: Rabun Gap
Grade: 9 (Class: 2015)
Evaluation: As always, our camp provides an opportunity for relative unknown players to make a name for him. Not only was Dusan a virtual unknown and would be our “surprise player,” most of the scouting services in attendance and many thought he may have been the best overall prospect. We are talking about a 6’9 PF that has the mobility and versatility to his game. He can step out and knock down the 3 pointer or make plays off the dribble. Like most European players, he has exceptional ball handling and passing skills for his size and position. While he may not be the most athletic guy on the court, he played with a passion and purpose that quickly made him a favorite.  Without question, MM+ and even HM- schools should definitely monitor his progress.

Player: 6’11 Chuck Ogbodo
Hometown: High Point, NC
School: High Point Christian
Grade: 11 (Class: 2013)
Evaluation: Ogbodo is a very long and athletic center that is starting to garnish interest from ACC schools. He is a quick leaper and is excellent in transition. He has a tremendous wing span and is definitely a defensive presence in the paint. He alters and blocks a lot of shots due to this length and timing. Like many athletic big men, he is more advanced on the defensive end of the floor, but is making huge strides in his overall offensive development. If he continues to improve his overall game in the next year as he has in the past year, he will definitely be a major target of HM schools. When you are 6’11 young, energetic, athletic and have the length, quickness and bounce, high majors will quickly take notice. The next step for his development is play hard consistently on both ends of the court.

Player: 6’8 Tyrek Coger
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
School: Upper Room Academy
Grade: 11 (Class: 2013)
Evaluation: Coger will have to overcome the “on again, off again, on again and off again” recruitment to the University of Missouri. Without question, he benefited greatly by playing on the same team as Andrew Rowsey and Coger enjoyed the passer friendly PG from Lexington, VA. In his first game of camp, Coger went 8-9 from the floor and actually ran the floor really well. He looked more agile than this past spring and summer, and he looked like he had something to prove and if his performance at camp can translate into the same during the high school season, he should be a major target of MM+ schools. He has soft hands and rebounded well and an excellent job of keeping the ball high on offensive put backs. In addition, Coger scored off dribble drives from the high post area to show off his versatility.

Player: 6’0 Jaylan Robertson
Hometown: Clayton, NC
School: Word of God
Grade: 10 (Class: 2014)
Evaluation: Robertson recently transferred to Word of God in Raleigh. He is a superb athletic PG that can flat out score. He has exceptional quickness and speed and one of his crowd pleasing transition dunks through traffic was the highlight of the day. The bouncy guard has all the physical intangibles and the next step in his development is knowing how to run a team effectively and efficiently. Currently, he is a score first PG who is oozing with confidence, but also needs to harness his confidence into better court awareness and higher basketball IQ. That being said, he is on track to be a MM+ prospect at worst case scenario.

Player: 6’5 Gejuan Long
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
School: Mt. Tabor
Grade: 11 (Class: 2013)
Evaluation: Without question, Long was the surprise player on the camp. Simply put, Long introduced him to the scouts and spectators in attendance with a dribble drive baseline move for a power dunk that sent the gym into frenzy. More importantly, he has a high motor and his overall intensity on both ends of the court was contagious. He is long, lanky and athletic wing that attacks the basket with vengeance at every opportunity. His full throttle approach to the game and his lock down pressure defense was refreshing to see. He definitely made a name for himself this past weekend with his freakish athleticism. He has good handles and is excellent in transition. The next step in his development is to play under control and develop a consistent outside jump shot. That being said, MM schools should carefully monitor his progress with Coach Mike Muse of Mt. Tabor.

Player: 5’11 Diante Baldwin
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: High Point Christian
Grade: 11 (Class: 2013)
Evaluation: Baldwin recently “reclassed” to the 2013 class with his transfer to High Point Christian and he is another name MM schools will want to monitor. Baldwin has “sneaky” athleticism and has exceptional ball handling and passing skills. He sees the floor really well. Baldwin does have good strength and athleticism and even had a few nice dunks in transition. Overall, Baldwin is a very active PG that has good fundamentals and basketball IQ.

Player: 5’10 Jonathan Williams
Hometown: Chester, VA
School: St. Patrick HS (NJ)
Grade: 10 (Class: 2014)
Evaluation: Go ahead and put this young man in your memory bank!  Williams will be suited up for Team Loaded next season and is currently enrolled for national powerhouse St. Patrick of New Jersey. Williams has a unique blend of athleticism and high basketball IQ. Without question, Williams is a true PG from the word “go.” We are talking about a strong and fast PG that can push the ball up the court in transition, but make excellent decisions with his court awareness and high basketball IQ. In addition to having many physical intangibles, he is truly gifted as a great teammate. He celebrated teammates for making good plays and also gave him high fives whenever he checked in or out of the game.  He is extremely unselfish and the next step for Williams is to develop a consistent long range jumper. He looks physically mature so I’m guessing he will be a sub 6 foot PG, but this young man has the “it factor.” He has all the skill sets to be an excellent floor general and a candidate for MM+/HM- schools. He is that good!
