Several stand out at Elite 75

The Elite 75 camp was loaded with talent and prospects maintained their place in the spotlight while some new names played their way into the picture. Who stood out to us? Check out our detailed report.

6’7 2014 Dwayne Morgan-Baltimore City College HS- Baltimore, MD

Without question, Morgan was one of the premier players at the Elite 75. He has a rare blend of length, athleticism, and skill that separates him from his peers. He has the ability to make advanced ball handling moves off the dribble. He felt more comfortable attacking the rim and didn’t take many perimeter jump shots. He has been nursing an injury and was his first competitive action in over 4 weeks. We were impressed with his ability to play defense and especially boxing out which is often unheard of in camp setting. Morgan mentioned UNLV, Maryland, Georgetown, UNC and Texas as his top five, but stated it was subject to chance. Just a 2014 prospect and we’re sure that list will continue to evolve.

6’8 2014 Tariq Owens- St. Vincent Palotti HS- Baltimore, MD

Owens came into the event with little to no hype or fanfare, but the Amile Jefferson body clone was one of the surprise players and did more to advance his stock than any single player. The long and wiry athletic wing has a nice midrange shooting touch. He is active on both ends of the court. He has fast switch muscles and is extremely quick off his feet. His length allows him to alter and block shots. Owens stated he has an offer from USF and is getting interest from Maryland, Miami, George Mason and Tennessee. Look for his stock continues to rise. He is definitely a prospect that high majors should monitor over the upcoming season and next spring/summer.

6’8 2013 Kennedy Meeks- West Charlotte HS- Charlotte, NC

One has to give Meeks credit for participating in the event. A consensus top 40 prospect, Meeks was just having fun for the day. He simply has the best set of hands and makes the overhead outlet pass as fluent as any one player to come along in quite some time. He used the event to showcase his outside touch. It looks like the recruiting battle is down to 5 schools: UNC, NC State, UK, IU and Georgetown. Meeks stated he was looking for a team that emphasized defense and had great team unity, plus an outstanding coaching staff.

6’7 2014 Dante Buford- Arlington Country Day- Jacksonville, FL

We have appropriately nicknamed Dante “Dr. Dunk” and he more than earned his nickname this weekend. He is truly one of the freakiest WF in the country. He is brutal on the rim, but showcased a much more improved shooting touch from the perimeter. He has good ball handling and passing skills for his position. We strongly feel he is vastly undervalued in the national rankings. While the majority of his interest is coming from mid majors, we still believe Buford is ready to take the next step.

6’11 280 lb. 2014 Lloyd Burgess- The Christ School- Arden, NC

Burgess is still a little raw and doesn’t possess outstanding quickness or foot speed. That being said, he runs the floor well enough due to his lack of conditioning. He also looked like he was nursing a sore knee, but fought through it for the day.  He is absolutely a “load” in the paint and he has super huge/soft hands. We were impressed with his ability to catch the ball in traffic. He does an adequate job of keeping the ball high on rebounds. With improved conditioning and game experience, mid majors will definitely be monitoring his progress at Christ School.

6’0 2014 PG Kamau Stokes- Dunbar HS- Baltimore, MD

Stokes was one of the top point guards in attendance at the Elite 75. He showcased a beautiful jumper and played “string music” consistently throughout the day. He is poised and exhibited outstanding floor leadership and directed players throughout the day. He has excellent quickness and a sure fire no miss mid major prospect.

5’10 2014 PG Marcus Johnson- Evelyn Mack Academy- Charlotte, NC

One word that simply describes Johnson is “explosive.” Outside of Dr. Dunk Buford, Johnson brought the house down with some of his impressive dunks. Johnson possesses a “wicked” right to left cross over and his speed off the dribble is difficult to contain. He has worked hard on his dribble drive pull up jumper and that seemed to be his best and most consistent offensive move for the day. The next step in his development is becoming an astute floor general.

6’2 2014 PG/SG Rashad Wattie- St. Frances Academy- Baltimore, MD

Wattie is a physically mature and athletic “combo” guard that is oozing with potential and upside. His strength, power and leaping ability for his size is impressive and on the offensive end of the court, he is difficult to contain. He has a “full throttle” approach to the game and has a quick first step and once he is by you, he is at the rim finishing with authority. He played with poise and confidence throughout the day and should be a prospect for MM schools.

5’9 2014 PG Trey Foster- West Charlotte HS- Charlotte, NC

We have seen Foster countless times throughout his young AAU and high school career. He has a reputation for being a big time shot maker and many people have labeled him as an undersized scoring PG. That being said, Foster relished the role of being floor general for the day as he was more concerned for setting up teammates and running his team. Foster has tremendous self-confidence, which is appealing, and his winning attitude on the court is contagious. Foster should be a high priority for schools in the Southern Conference, Big South and even CAA level.

6’1 2016 PG Timmy Walker- The Christ School- Arden, NC

Walker is one of the promising young players in a loaded 2016 class for North Carolina. Walker has a physically mature and athletic frame and possesses strength, quickness and power for his age/grade. He is explosive off the dribble and has mastered a mid range pull up jumper which is unique for his class. He has the ability to knock down perimeter jumpers with consistency and also take his man off the dribble. The next step in his development is mastering the nuisances of being a floor general.

6’4 2014 SG Che Bob- Arlington Country Day School- Jacksonville, FL

Che Bob is a strong and athletic WG that possesses all the physical intangibles for his size/position. He attacks the rim with authority and has a quick first step. He has excellent body control and has the ability to take over a game offensively, but needs to have stronger effort more of the time. We were impressed with his lateral quickness and can create havoc defensively when he wants to. While we have seen him shoot the perimeter jump shot in past venues, he was more comfortable attacking the rim. Che Bob should be a solid MM prospect.

6’6 2013 PF BJ Gladden- Olympic HS- Charlotte, NC

Gladden is a strong and physically gifted player that is excellent finishing at the rim. He has excellent body control and has the unique ability to use either hand efficiently and effectively. We project Gladden more as an undersized PF.

5’10 2014 PG Giovanni Mack- Providence HS- Charlotte, NC

The best word to describe Mack is “solid.” A true floor leader/general that plays the game the right way from the PG position and rarely makes a bad play even in a camp setting. He has a solidly built frame and his strength will surprise you. He has the ability to score from the perimeter but he uses his dribble drive ability to get into the gaps to set up teammates. He may have been the best pure PG in attendance and has excellent basketball IQ. He knows the value of balancing the floor and setting up his teammates.  He has excellent poise and confidence and will be a PG to watch in the 2014 class in North Carolina.

6’3 2016 PG/SG Kishawn Pritchett- Lake Norman HS- Mooresville, NC

Pritchell is a nice “combo” guard that had the combination of excellent ball handling and passing skills, but the ability to be a lethal shooter from the perimeter. We loved his composure and self-confidence throughout the day. He has solid fundamentals and a nice blend of athleticism to complement his overall game.

5’11 2014 PG Tayon Gleaves- Independence HS- Charlotte, NC

Gleaves is a lefty PG that is quick on quick and has the ability to push him into a D1 prospect with added strength. We hope to check him out more thoroughly throughout his high school season. He could be a sleeper in the class of 2014.

Queen City Showcase: Part 1

The inaugural Queen City Showcase held at the Carolina Courts was a huge success for opening day of the July “live period.”  Over 80 teams participated and over 60 Division I coaches were in attendance. Without question, event organizer Trent McAllister deserves special credit for pulling off a well-organized and professional event. The coaches packet was one of the best I’ve seen in many years covering live events. Action started promptly and finished on time!  The competition was fierce and there were some hard fought contests between CP3 All Stars, Upward Stars, and Team United.

Below is list of players from Part 1 of the Queen City Showcase

Player: 6’2 2014 PG Marcus Stroman
City: Columbia, SC
High School: Keenan
AAU Team: Keenan
Evaluation: Keenan lost a hard fought contest to a well-coached and disciplined Charlotte Reign team by the score of 52-49, but the recent South Carolina commit had a solid showing in front of new South Carolina Head Coach Frank Martin. Stroman showcased his ultra-quick cross over repeatedly as he had little to no problem getting into the lane. Eventually, the opposing team went to  a 2-3 zone to help stop his dribble penetration. Stroman has a nice arsenal of offensive moves and his “euro step” in transition is impressive. He has a solidly built frame and has good athleticism and plays taller with his long arms. His athleticism and skill set should be well utilized in Coach Martin’s up tempo style at South Carolina. The next step for Stroman is to develop a floater and mid-range game.

Player: 6’4 2013 SG Dustin Dodd
City: Charlotte, NC
High School: Hickory Grove
AAU Team: Charlotte Reign
Evaluation: Dodd is a throwback to the fundamentally sound player with a high basketball IQ. He simply knows how to play the game. He finished with 15 points and scored from a variety of spots on the floor. He is a deadly perimeter shooter and has excellent extension and follow through on his jumper. In addition, Dodd has surprisingly advanced ball handling and passing skills for his size and position and was useful in handling the ball against the full court pressure by Keenan High School of Columbia, SC. Dodd should be a target of schools in the Big South and Southern Conference.

Player: 6’6 2013 WF James Chapman
City: High Point, NC
High School: High Point Wesleyan
AAU Team: Charlotte Reign
Evaluation:  Chapman sometimes was the player that often got overlooked on his high school team that featured Montay Brandon (FSU) Theo Pinson, and JaQuel Richmond last season, but the long and athletic wing made some big time moves that intrigued many of the D1 coaches in attendance. Chapman is extremely active on both ends of the court and does have an effective mid range game. He has excellent lift and elevation on his jumper. Chapman has long arms and big feet and looks like he has plenty of room for growth height wise and physical growth. What you see with Chapman is definitely not the finished product, but many of the lower tier D1 conference should continue to monitor his progress.

Player: 6’4 2014 WG Charles Smith
City: Columbia, SC
High School: Keenan
AAU Team: Keenan
Evaluation: Smith a strong physical WG that plays with a relentless motor on the court. He has a blue collar work horse mentality and battles each and every possession. Smith was playing up a grade and his play did not indicate him being an underclassman. He finished/tied with a game high 10 points for a well balanced Keenan attack. Lower tier D1 programs should continue to monitor his progress.

Player: 6’4 2014 WG Mike Hughes
City: Winston-Salem, NC
High School: Winston-Salem Prep
AAU Team: CP3 16U
Evaluation: A quick and athletic WF that is excellent in transition. Hughes has the ability to grab a defensive rebound and go coast to coach with his advanced ball handling skills for his size/position. He matched his athleticism with a beautiful “euro step” in full speed transition into a reverse layup which may have been one of the nicest offensive moves all night. Hughes has tight handles and made solid decisions in all the games we watched.

Player: 6’4 2013 PF Sharwyn McGee
City: Raleigh, NC
High School: Upper Room Academy
AAU Team: CP3 17U
Evaluation: We have written about McGee on several occasions from our Phenom 150 camp to other exposure camp setting. The physically mature PF is like a bull in a china closet. He plays the game at one speed and that is with his foot all the way down. He is a blue collar  workhorse that simply gets the job done. While he will not overwhelm you with any single skill set, but at the end of the day you can count on productivity. He seems to be in double digits in scoring and rebounding almost every single game.

Player: 6’92013 PF/C Kennedy Meeks
City: Charlotte, NC
High School: West Charlotte
AAU Team: Team United 17U
Evaluation: Meeks plays marginal minutes in opening night of the Queen City Showcase.  With the busy June schedule that rivaled an NBA schedule, we were surprised and shocked to see Meeks play in the QCS. While his minutes were limited, one must give him credit for being there for his teammates. We wrote about Meeks at the Nike EYBL in Hampton and he simply put on a clinic against California Supreme and 6’8 Marcus Lee. Generally regarded as one of the best passing big men since Wes Unseld, Meeks is just as humble and polite off the court as he is physically noticeable on the court. We were able to get up with Meeks afterwards and he stated his top five schools were NC State, UNC, Georgetown, IU, and UL.

Player: 6’5 2013 SG  Sindarius Thornwell
City: Lancaster, SC
High School: Oak Hill Academy
Evaluation: Like Meeks, we didn’t expect Thornwell to be in attendance or much less play. While the game is centered around the individual play of so many young players, he is refreshing to see players like Thornwell and Meeks to be there in support of their team. This speaks volume and shows these young guys have their priorities in order. While Thornwell didn’t play a lot of minutes, it was the fact that he participated that caught our attention.

Player: 6’4 2013 SG Matt Howard
City: Columbia, SC
High School: AC Flora
AAU Team: Team United 17U
Evaluation: We have always been impressed with the play of Howard. Last night, he scored a team high 16 points from all spots on the floor. He has a smooth mid-range game but has the strength and athleticism to make impressive dunks in transition or off missed jumpers. Howard is the ultimate “glue guy” and seems to do all the little things needed for his team to be successful. He can be the team leader while Thornwell and Meeks are on the bench or assume the role of the perfect teammate and unsung hero. That being said, the talented and multi-skilled SG has a bright future ahead of him. He is an excellent student and the likes of Harvard and Stanford are schools in the hunt for Howard. Assistant Coach Mike Schrage of Stanford was front and center for his opening night game.

Player: 6’5 2012 SG Colton Ray
City: Lafayette, VA
High School: Lafayette
AAU Team: Virginia Venom
Evaluation: Coming into the event  Colton Ray had zero offers, but they may have changed after his outstanding shooting performance against a powerful Team United team. He tallied a game high 18 points knocking in 6 long distance 3 pointers. The slender and lanky SG has a smooth shooting touch with excellent shooting techniques  and fundamentals. In speaking with Ray afterwards, he stated there was a strong possibility of attending a prep school. Without question, he has the ability to play D1 basketball and if any school is looking for a dead eye shooter, need to look no further!

Player: 6’4 2013 PG Gregory Wilson
City: Waccamaw, NC
High School: Waccamaw Academy
AAU Team: Team United 17U
Evaluation: Wilson is a strong and physically mature PG/SG. He had a strong showing opening night and utilized the Earl the Pearl Monroe “reverse spin move” to perfection. He was very effective in utilizing his strength by getting into the lane repeatedly where he showcased a nice mid-range game. In addition, he played under control and showcased his leadership abilities. He could be a steal at the Big South level.

Player: 6’2 2013 SG Clay Byrd
City: Morganton, NC
High School: East Burke
AAU Team: Team United 17U
Evaluation: A smart and heady player that maximizes his ability to the fullest. The southpaw has a silky smooth shooting touch and showcased the ability to slash and attack the basket. A fundamentally sound player with a high basketball IQ that should be a high priority for  schools in the Big South and Southern Conference.

Player: 5’10 2013 PG Darren Williams
City: Red Springs, NC
High School: Flora MacDonald
AAU Team: Team United 17U
Evaluation: We watched Williams repeatedly in high school, but his most impressive performance may have come at the Nike EYBL in Hampton, VA when he went head to head against super sophomore PG Parker Jackson Cartwright. Williams picked the talented PG twice in the open court and won the individual battle plus his team pulled off the upset against California Supreme. Williams is a stout/strong PG that plays with a little moxy and has a bulldog mentality. His decision making at the PG position is improving and will probably be a strong MM prospect.

Player: 5’10 2014 PG Jaylan Robertson
City: Raleigh, NC
High School: Word of God
AAU Team: Team United 17U
Evaluation: Robertson is one of the most athletic PG in the country for his size. He has quickness and explosiveness that allows him to elevate quickly near the rim. He has many of the physical attributes and once his decision making matches his athleticism, his ceiling will only continue to rise.

Player: 6’4 2015 PG/SG Michael Baez
City: Huntersville, NC
High School: Hopewell
AAU Team: Queen City Thunder
Evaluation: Baez is a promising young prospect. He is physically mature and has a strong physique. He has solid fundamentals and plays under control and rarely makes mistakes. He has a soft shooting touch, but is best at the mid-range jumper. He is aggressive in attacking the basket and finishes well due to strong and sturdy frame. We loved his instincts on the court and his IQ is advanced for his age/grade, but also sports nice athleticism. He has advanced ball handling skills for his size and can easily transition into the PG. He played a lot of minutes at the PG position and we look for his stock to rise over the summer. We strongly feel he has mid major possibilities.

Breakout Performance

Player: 6’7 2015 PF Luke Maye
City: Charlotte, NC
High School: William Hough
AAU Team: Queen City Thunder
Evaluation: The Adam Morrison clone enjoyed a breakout performance at the Queen City Showcase on opening night against Team United and followed up with an even more impressive performance on the second day. We first watched Maye at the Dave Telep Carolina Challenge and his performance was marginal at best. That being said, he has improved and looked more comfortable in a team setting. Maye is fundamentally sound and has a high basketball IQ. He has solid ball handling skills for his size/position, but is advanced in his court vision and passion skills. He is an excellent perimeter shooter with a high release point and his range is uncanny. What separated Maye from many players his position, he didn’t float on the perimeter but rather worked hard on the interior for low post position. If he didn’t receive the ball in the low post, he was patience and then popped out to the perimeter where he is quite lethal. While Maye is not a high flyer or the most athletic player, he can develop into a high major prospect. Currently, he has a lone offer from UNCC but look for his offer list to grow this summer. South Carolina and Virginia Tech were on hand to watch his impressive performance.

Player: 6’5 2014 PF BJ Gladden
City: Charlotte, NC
High School: Kennedy Charter
AAU Team: CP3 16U
Evaluation:  The strong and powerful combo/forward showcased a game of strength and finesse in CP3’s win over SKG. He finished with 12 points and was the game’s leading scorer. He made two consecutive moves to the basket utilizing his weak hand making many coaches in attendance questioning which was his strong hand. Gladden is an excellent finisher in the lane and uses his girth and strength extremely well to his benefit. He is a hardnosed kid and plays with a sincere passion and purpose. He has a surprisingly quick first step and his extremely difficult to stop in transition. In addition, he is excellent in utilizing pump fakes on the interior and getting defenders off their feet to initiate contact. A borderline HM prospect, and if he can fine tune his perimeter skills his ceiling will continue to grow. Currently, he is getting some high major interest but with improvements in certain areas, the interest may turn into offers.

Player: 6’4 2014 SG LJ Peak
City: Gaffney, SC
High School: Gaffney
AAU Team: Upward Stars 16U
Evaluation: The nationally ranked SG probably was the leading scorer in the Queen City Showcase. He put up big numbers each day and showcased a solid all around game. Known basically as an athletic slasher, Peak was consistent with his perimeter jumper. While Peak doesn’t play with a lot of emotion, his game speaks for itself. He has a physically mature body and he utilized this full offensive repertoire both days and looked like he has fully recovered from a groin pull earlier in the summer. One thing is for certain, Peak plays under control and rarely gets frustrated or upset. One of his biggest attributes is his consistency and his consistency is usually at a very high level. We watched Peak play in two games and he tallied over 25 in each of the games. He seemed more comfortable from the perimeter and when his shot is falling from long distance, he is very difficult to contain. Peak is a no miss high major prospect.

Nike EYBL: Team United 66 California Supreme 57

Team United pulled off the upset of the day by giving California Supreme their first loss of EYBL league season. Team United is now 6-3 while California is 8-1. Coming into the contest, California Supreme garnished the most buzz as one of the elite level teams in the EYBL but someone forgot to communicate that to the coaching staff and team members of Team United.

Another story line was the matchup between 6’9 Marcus Lee of California Supreme and 6’9 Kennedy Meeks of Team United. With the recent accolades of teammate Sindarius ThornwellKennedy Meeks was like a forgotten man or placed in the witness protection program as he was getting little to no love. In addition, conventional wisdom would have given the advantage to California Supreme and 6’9 Marcus Lee who had become one of the hottest prospects in the country. That being said, Team United executed their game plan to perfection and left many in attendance scratching their heads. Team United was led by 6’9 Kennedy Meeks with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 block shots while 6’2 Matthew Howard continued making a name for himself by scoring 15 points and 6’4 Sindarius Thornwell finished with 13 points. 6’3 Jordan Mathews led California Supreme with 14 points while 5’9 2015 PG Parker-Jackson Cartwright finished with 12 points. 6’9 Marcus Lee was held in check and seemed frustrated by the size of Meeks and ended up with 5 points and 4 rebounds.

6’9 2013 Kennedy Meeks (Team United) if the contest between Meeks and Lee were a boxing match, it would have been a clear TKO! Meeks completely dominated this game from start to finish and made a believer out of me. First of all, he recorded a double-double against one of the hottest names in the country. He scored 17 points going 7-9 from the floor and 3-4 from the FT line. He also knocked down two 15 foot jumpers after a well executed “pin down” screen where Meeks rotated near the top of the key. My concern in the past has been whether Meeks could play with more energy and a higher motor. While Meeks will never be that high energy guy, he does have a game that resembles former UNC star Shaun May who won a NCAA National Championship. One thing is for certain, Meeks is a winner and he wins at every level. His high school team has won a state championship and he is winning on a good, but not great Team United squad. At 6’9 and 280 pounds, he does occupy a lot of space and he is excellent at using it to his advantage.  While he doesn’t sport great bounce, he does position himself rather well and does something very few big men do today; he BOXES out on both the offensive and defensive end of the court! He is a two handed and may we add “sure handed” rebounder where he possesses the best outlet pass in high school or even college. Yes, he is that good at the outlet pass and was tremendous at the “pitch ahead” pass to open teammates in transition. He is patience on offense and uses a steady diet of pump fakes and up and under moves against taller and more athletics players. Since Meeks doesn’t elevate much on his jumper, one would think many of his shots would get blocked, but not one shot was blocked by the more athletic 6’9 Marcus Lee.

6’4 2013 Matthew Howard (Team United) while he lives in the shadow of teammate Sindarius Thornwell, coaches need to take a good long look at this athletic WG from Columbia, South Carolina. While he doesn’t have the flash to his game, he is one of those “glue guys” that is often needed on championship teams and against California Supreme he was tremendous and efficient. He scored 15 points going 6-8 from the floor (1-2 from the 3 point line) and 2-2 from the FT line. He has the ability to stretch the defense and take his man off the dribble. While he was really good offensively today, I really was more impressed with his defense. He is tough as nails on the defensive end of the court. While he may not have high level skill sets, he would be a great find for mid major schools.

6’4 2013 Sindarius Thornwell (Team United) came into the contest as one of the hotter prospects from the EYBL, but in the game against the California Supreme he was solid, but not spectacular.  Thornwell scored 13 points going 4-10 from the floor and 5-6 from the FT line. He didn’t attempt any 3 pointers. While his shots were not falling as efficiently as previous games, you have to give him credit for attacking the rim and drawing fouls. He is a very talented WG that simply knows how to score and his suitors at the high level will continue to surge.

6’9 2013 Marcus Lee (California Supreme) simply stated, it wasn’t his day at the office and we were completely surprised in the outcome of the game and the matchup against Meeks. That being said, it is easy to understand why he is becoming a hot commodity. He is a 6’9 athletic WF/PF that is highly skilled and oozing with potential.

6’3 2013 Jordan Mathews (California Supreme) is the son of UCLA assistant coach Phil Mathews and on Sunday against Team United, he was without question the best player on the California Supreme team. He is a highly skilled WG that has a nice arsenal of offensive moves. He finished with 15 points going 6-8 from the floor (1-2 from the 3 point line) and 2-2 from the FT line. He was scoring off the dribble with the pull up jumper and was aggressively taking it to the rim. Although he only took two 3 point shot attempts his technique was “right on” While we only watched California Supreme for one full game, I was surprised he was not getting more buzz and attention. In addition, he handled the ball extremely well and led the team in assists with 3. I can’t help but think his stock will continue to rise.

5’7 2014 Parker-Jackson Cartwright (California Supreme) enjoyed solid and productive game going for 12. No question, he is quick and crafty and has a high basketball IQ. He scored 12 points going 4-10 from the floor (2-3 from the 3 point line) and 2-2 from the FT line. He dished out 2 assists and had 2 turnovers.

5’10 2013 Darren Williams (Team United) came off the bench and enjoyed a solid game. He scored 9 points going 3-5 from the floor and 3-4 from the FT line. He dished out 2 assists, but it should be noted he had 2 big steals against Parker-Jackson Cartwright (one which was a big time rip at mid court) More importantly, Williams has outstanding quickness of his own, but is much stronger than PJC of California Supreme and one has to give credit where credit is due and Williams did not allow little to any dribble penetration by the young California Phenom PG.

Best of the 2012 Dave Telep Carolina Challenge: 1-10

The Phenom Hoop Report was in full force this past Saturday to cover the Dave Telep Carolina Challenge. My counterpart Ryan Mattocks was covering gym one while I was covering action in gym two. We wanted to get a thorough evaluation by watching entire contests to get the most complete player summary as possible and I believe we achieved just that. We will divide our report into two parts, but today we will look at the top 25 performers of the day based upon performance.   [Read more...]
