Evaluation: We first heard about Shaun Kirk through Eric Bossi and Jacey Zembal of Rivals back in the summer as he played AAU basketball for the Carolina Raptors. Kirk was playing in the Peach State tournament and exploded on the scene with a tremendous single game performance by pouring in a game high 32 points. Kirk resided in Whiteville, North Carolina, which is a small town near Wilmington, North Carolina. This past weekend, the Phenom Hoop Report was on hand to cover the Elite 75 showcase and one of our top priorities was to watch the play of the bouncy, athletic wing. Kirk came into the event with a reputation of being an efficient shooter from the perimeter, especially from the 3-point line. At Elite 75, Kirk simply stole the show! Kirk has tremendous length and his explosiveness to the rim was eye catching and brought the house down on many “rim punishing dunks.” The gym at Rocky River High School had become his own personal playground and the equipment belonged to him each and every time he stepped out unto the court. While Kirk didn’t showcase his perimeter shot often, but it was apparent that he had tremendous elevation and lift each was appealing. He had a high extension, release and follow through to become an elite shooter at the next level. In addition, Kirk was fabulous off the dribble and once near the rim, punished it every single time!
In speaking with Kirk afterwards, we were impressed with his soft-spoken voice and mannerisms. Everything was yes sir, no sir and thank you sir. Looking at his length, we questioned if he knew his wingspan and he quickly stated 7’0, which looked about right. While Kirk is virtually an unknown nationally, don’t expect that to be for long. We strongly feel Kirk will make a gigantic leap in the national rankings. Yes, he is that good!
Coach Derrick Bond Evaluation: In speaking with Coach Bond of Flora MacDonald, he had a lot to say about Kirk. The young man had expressed interest in attending Flora MacDonald after the high school season. Coach Bond stated he remember watching him play at the Peach State tournament and was sitting next to Eric Bossi and Jacey Zembal of Rivals when he stepped into the national conversation with national recruiting scouts. During a seven-minute stretch in the game, Kirk simply took over and poured in 24 points. He was knocking down 3-point jumpers, exploding to the rim and having a field day. Since the summer, Kirk enrolled in Flora MacDonald in Red Springs, North Carolina and reclassed to 2016. Coach Bond stated Kirk was more talented and gifted as a player than Luke Cothron who he had coached earlier. Coach Bond was quick to point out that Kirk has tremendous mannerism, but most of all a great work ethic. He’s a young man that only wants to improve and get better. He has a very humble attitude and unlike many players today, he is not demanding. Coach Bond then spoke about his elite level athleticism and stated Kirk was horsing around in practice and attempted the Michael Jordan running dunk from the free throw line. While Kirk’s foot was about 12 inches inside the free throw line, his elevation was unreal. What impressed Coach Bond was his “track like stride.” Coach Bond will be bringing Kirk to the NC Phenom 150 camp October 26 we will get to watch him even more closely against some of the top players in then state and region. October 26th can’t get here quick enough!
