In today’s issue we will take a close look at Part 6 of the NC Phenom 150 Evaluation Camp. Over 30 division I prospects attended this event and wanted to give a thorough and detailed look at the below players.
Player: 6’2 Dahmer Boswell
Hometown: Concord, NC
School: Concord Cannon
Class: 2013
Evaluation: The 6’2 Boswell is a hybrid combo guard that is a solid shooter with good fundamentals. He has an advanced understanding of the game and plays extremely hard on the defensive end of the floor, which is rarely seen in camp settings. The next step in his development is to develop more perimeter skills such as ball handling and passing. Boswell had a successful camp and has the opportunity to become a solid prospect at a D2 or NAIA level.
Player: 5’9 Darrian Evans
Hometown: Morganton, NC
School: Morganton Freedom
Class: 2013
Evaluation: The 5’9 Evans is an ultra quick PG that is excellent in transition. He has excellent open court speed and does an adequate job of shifting gears in his chance of pace dribble. What’s even more impressive his is blend of athleticism and skill which will help offset his size at the next level. Evan has excellent fundamentals and his court vision and basketball IQ were impressive. The next step in his development is to become physically stronger to become a solid D1 prospect. That being said, he should have suitors at the D2 and NAIA level.
Player: 6’5 Blake Cranor
Hometown: Mooresville, NC
School: Lake Norman HS
Class: 2013
Evaluation: The 6’5 Cranor is a solid basketball player with good fundamentals and basketball IQ. He has good size and rebounds well for his size/position. Cranor is quite effective as a midrange shooter and is efficient from the baseline. His “blue collar” work ethic on the court was noticeable and with improved strength and athleticism could easily chase a D2 or NAIA scholarship.
Player: 6’0 Robbie Hagopian
Hometown: Concord, NC
School: Northwest Cabarrus
Class: 2013
Evaluation: The best word to describe this young PG is winner. Hagopian is a solid lead guard that plays the game the correct way. He plays hard on both ends of the court and his passion is refreshing. He has a solid frame and size for a PG, but more importantly Hagopian has the intangibles that are in demand at the next level. His court demeanor and leadership are impressive. Schools in the Big South or Southern Conference should carefully monitor his spring/summer progress along with his senior season in high school.
Player: 6’2 Isiah Taylor
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School: Myers Park
Class: 2014
Evaluation: Isaiah Taylor is a potential D1 prospect with outstanding fundamentals and high basketball IQ. His biggest attribute currently is his ability to score and shoot the basketball. Taylor has a pure shooting stroke but also sports advanced ball handling and passing skills. While he is equally talented at both the PG and SG position, his best opportunities moving forward are to develop a PG mentality to maximize this talents and ability.
Player: 5’11 Kender Thompson
Hometown: Statesville, NC
School: Statesville HS
Class: 2014
Evaluation: Kender Thompson greatest attribute is his sheer athleticism. Thompson has excellent quickness and an explosive first step and has an impressive bounce to his step. He has the ability to blow by defenders in the open court and can use his athleticism to finish well in traffic by elevating nicely to the rim. Without question, Thompson has the physical attributes and if he continues to refine his PG skills in the next two years, he could be a solid D2 or NAIA prospect.
Player: 5’9 Emmanuel Maree
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
School: North Forsyth
Class: 2014
Evaluation: The 5’9 Maree has “jet like” quickness and is excellent in transition. More importantly, it is difficult for defenders keeping the speedster out of the lane. He is tremendous in dribble penetration and finishes efficiently in traffic, but is also effective in kicking out to open shooters in dead spots of the defense. We were also impressed with his lateral quickness and ability to become a factor on the defensive end of the floor. With continued growth and development, Maree is a solid D1 prospect.
Player: 6’2 Trevor Mayo
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: Southern Guilford
Class: 2014
Evaluation: Mayo is a solid fundamentally sound player with good instincts and basketball IQ. Currently, his strongest attribute is his ability on the offense side of the floor. We really like his ability to knock down the midrange jumper and his shooting technique. Another “blue collar” type SG that plays hard and can make a solid impact at the D2 or NAIA level with continued improvement in his ball handling and passing skills. His work ethic and attitude should bode well for him moving forward.
Player: 6’1 Kalin Cotton
Hometown: McLeansville, NC
School: Eastern Guilford
Class: 2015
Evaluation: Cotton is a promising young freshman that possesses good fundamentals but exercises a hard ethic and desire to play hard. With players as young as Cotton, you want to see passion and effort and he meets these requirements with flying colors. While many young prospects takes plays off, he plays hard on both ends of the court and with a purpose. He did a good job of scoring and the next step in his development is to continue refining and developing his perimeter skills.
Player: 5’8 DeShawn Patterson
Hometown: Lenoir, NC
School: West Caldwell
Class: 2015
Evaluation: The lefty PG is another outstanding young prospect with exceptional speed and quickness. While he is somewhat undersized, he plays with a chip on his shoulder and certain flair of confidence. He understands his role at the PG position and rarely tries to force the action and allows the game come to him. The next step in his development is to development a true PG mentality by being more vocal on the court.
Player: 5’9 Rahman Washington
Hometown: Hickory, NC
School: Hickory HS
Class: 2015
Evaluation: The 5’9 Washington is a super quick PG with catlike instincts on the court. He has the ability to weave in and out of traffic and penetrate with so much ease, but more importantly is his ability to take control of the team. Simply put, Washington has the “it” factor when it comes to young PG’s. He understands what it takes to be a leader and his young man has a strong upside. Without question, he has the chemical make to be a strong D1 candidate at the PG position. His best days are clearly in front of him.
Player: 5’11 Zach Boggs
Hometown: Sanford, NC
School: Grace Christian
Class: 2015
Evaluation: Boggs is an excellent shooter and possesses all the correct fundamentals and technique on his jumper. He compliments his shooting with an outstanding understanding of the game. We love his overall basketball IQ and unselfish play. While he is a solid ball handler, he will need to develop more advanced ball handling and passing skills to become the complete player. Boggs has a solid hard ethic and attitude to become the best he can become!
Player: 6’3 Jermaine Blackmon
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School: Hopewell
Class: 2015
Evaluation: The young lefty has the blend of athleticism and skill to be an outstanding high school player and potential D1 prospect. He has a solid and strong frame and could easily grow to 6’6 or taller. Blackmon has the ability to shoot the midrange jumper or take his man off the dribble. He has the physical components and the skill, but must take his skill set and apply more energy and passion to his game. Blackmon has the ability to become really good and has the opportunity to become one of the top players in the 2015 class.
Player: 5’5 Jalen Brewer
Hometown: Cornelius, NC
School: Bailey MS
Class: 2016
Evaluation: Brewer is a promising young PG that has a tremendous feel for the game that is unequal by his peers. He has advanced ball handling and passing skills and his court vision is exceptional for his age/grade. In addition to being an outstanding ball handler, he is deadly with his jumper. While it is still early in his development, Brewer has the chance to make a name for him in the Charlotte area for many years to come.
Player: 5’3 Sean Stallo
Hometown: Hurricane, WV
School: Charleston Catholic
Class: 2016
Evaluation: We absolutely loved this talented young PG from West Virginia. Stallo is fundamentally sound and has the complete package. He is a tremendous shooter and his jump shot is nearly picture perfect, but more importantly his court vision and basketball IQ is beyond his years. One can tell this young man has spent amble time in the gym. Definitely a name to watch over his high school career!
Player: 5’9 Travon Mayo
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
School: Jamestown Middle
Class: 2017
Evaluation: Mayo has good size and skill for his age/grade. He plays hard and loved his passion for the game. He has a big-time work ethic and attitude for learning, which is most important for someone this young. He has been well coached and knows the game well and is another young player to monitor during his upcoming high school years.
Player: 5’3 Rasir Bolton
Hometown: South Chesterfield, VA
School: Matoaca MS
Class: 2017
Evaluation: The youngster was absolutely fun to watch. He played with so much energy and passion and wish it could rub off on many of the older players in camp. Bolton is scrappy on defense and is a bundle of energy on the offensive end of the court.
