Phenom Hoop Report: Meet SEBL 17U

Back in May, SEBL 17U and Coach Tony Edwards won the Inaugural Reebok Showdown Championship by defeating Team Loaded by the score of 73-67. However, one of the tournament’s most exciting games came in the semi-finals when 6’3 2013 J.T. Miller drained a last second 3 pointer as SEBL pulled off the 68-66 win over Upward Stars. Be sure to check out our write up from the tournament.

Fast forward to the July “live period” and one of the most exciting games at the Fab48 came in Super Pool play when SEBL stunned Texas Select 17U by a last second 3 pointer by J.T. Miller. SEBL trailed Texas Select and Emmanuel Mudiay by the score of 66-64. Just like in the semi-final game against Upward Stars at the Reebok Showdown, it was the athletic 6’3 WG J.T. Miller providing the heroics once again as he knocked down the winning 3 pointer with 1.6 seconds. This win enabled SEBL to win Pool G with an 3-0 record, but in speaking with Coach Dwight Miller, a lot of the credit goes to NC Phenom 150 Alum 6’2 Jalen Jones with his outstanding job defending consensus top 5 player in the 2014 class PG Emmanuel Mudiay to just 6 points.

Be sure to check out Jalen Jones crazy dunk at Fab48:

Sweet 16 Bracket Play

Day # 4 : SEBL 17U (NC) 43 vs. New York Rens 17U (NY) 55

The story line for the SEBL can be summed up in one word, “balance.” SEBL 17U played well as a team and used it’s balanced scoring attack throughout the Fab48 Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Leading the way for SEBL was 6’3 J.T. Miller with 10.8 PPG and shot a blistering 65% from the floor and 45% from the 3 point line. 6’8 2013 Donovan Gilmore joined the team for the July live period and his presence was immediately felt. The strong and powerful PF averaged 10 PPG while 5’11 2013 PG Darryl Davender averaged 9.6 PPG and shot 70% from the floor. 6’8 2013 PF/C Tyrek Coger enjoyed a solid and stellar spring/summer evaluation period. He was named the MVP of the Inaugural Reebok Showdown Championship and continued with averaging 8.8 PPG while 6’8 combo forward Donte Reynolds averaged 7.6 PPG. Rounding out the scoring for SEBL was Jalen Jones with 5.4 PPG, Keyseen Hinton with 2.4 PPG, Shane Whitfield with 2 PPG, Josh Dawson 1.4 PPG and David Caraher with 1 PPG.

SEBL 17U won the four games by an 9.75 average per game, but felt a little short for in bracket play against a very talented NY Rens 17U team by the score of 55-43. Overall, SEBL faced tremendous adversity during the July evaluation period playing without Head Coach Tony Edwards and PG Waymond Wright who was out with a knee injury. Without question, it was a successful and challenging first year for Coach Dwight Miller’s SEBL team and organization.

Team Vision July Summary

This past May, we were able to watch Team Vision in the Reebok Showdown Tournament and finished tied for first place in pool play, but lost out on the point spread. That being said, we were impressed with the potential of Team Vision and members of its team. We thought 6’6 2013 WF Pajo Twagirayezu of Asheville Christian as a very intriguing prospect. Twagirayezu is an athletic WF that is already gaining interest by mid major schools and with his blend of skill, basketball IQ, and athleticism, it is not hard to figure out why! During the Reebok Showdown, he averaged a double-double with 10 PPG and 11 RPG. Back in May, we wrote the following, “Twagirayezu is from Rwanda and was a member of the Junior National team and just received an invite to play on the Rwanda National Team in a qualifying event in June and should return to AAU activity with Team Vision during the “live period. College coaches will love his intensity, passion and athleticism as a solid D1 prospect.

Another player that caught our eye during the Reebok Tournament was 6’2 2015 Freshman Devante Saxon and 6’2 2014 PG Matthew Wood of Asheville Christian. Saxon was unable to play during the “live period” but Wood was stellar throughout the summer. Back in May, we wrote the following “The long and slender PG from Team Vision is a true team facilitator and is more concerned about setting up this teammates than individual scoring. Averaged only 5 PPG but did have two games where he dished out 10 and 14 assists. Woods has a solid skill set, but it is his basketball IQ and understanding of the game that makes this young man an intriguing D1 prospect. He simply knows how to run a team efficiently and effectively in transition or in the half court set. Woods looks the part and with his long slender frame, he looks like he can add muscle and more height which will only make him more attractive to D1 college coaches.”

Wow!  What a July for Team Vision

We also thought 6’5 2013 Myles Marshal of Rabun Gap High School of Rabun Gap, Georgia had a chance to become a solid D1 prospect at the lower tier schools. We wrote “Marshal is an undersized PF, but the young man was consistent and a complete warrior on the boards the entire weekend. Marshall averaged a double-double as scored 19 PPG and 11 RPG. He was a rebounding machine as he did an excellent job of gaining position both offensively and defensively. He is a throwback to the term “garbage player” as he as a knack for being at the right place at the right time. He is tremendous around the basket as he finishes well against bigger and taller defenders.

Team Vision traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to participate in the Reebok Showdown Series July 13-15th. In the opening game, Team Vision lost a tough game by four points to the NJ Cyclones. 6’6 2013 WF Patjo Twagirayezu poured in a game high 24 points while the 6’2 PG Matthew Wood tallied 19 points. Next up for Team Vision was a solid win over the Brooklyn Badgers (NY) in which they won by 9 points. It was again the one-two punch of Wood and Twagirayezu that led the way as they scored 21 and 15 points respectively. 6’8 2013 PF Ethan Gills was a work horse by tallying 12 points and recorded 8 rebounds. In an exhibition game against E1T1 16U, Team Vision played 20 minutes after they earlier win but still pulled out the victory over a talented E1T1 16U team. Top performers were  Matthew Woods ( 6’2 Point guard from Asheville Christian Academy 2014 class) had 17 points.  He had to play all the minutes at the point guard.  The backup guard was not available for this game.   Patjo Twagirayezu ( 6’6 wing from Asheville Christian Academy 2013 class) with 22  points and Ethan Gills (6’8 power forward from Rabun Gap School, GA 2013 Class) took 2 charges and had 7 rebounds in the first half and we sat him for the remainder of the game to rest his sore ankle.  Joseph Hank Gompers ( 6’3 wing from Asheville Christian Academy 2014 class) played well for us hitting 2 threes and playing lock down defense on their best wing player.  Hank has a great upside. He was a star last year at North Asheville Christian Academy. Next up was a one point OT loss to South Jersey Select. Twagirayezu was outstanding once again by having a game high 25 points. He was effective off the dribble drive as he used his length and athleticism repeatedly to get to the rim, plus he was outstanding with the pull up jumper. 6’2 Matthew Woods poured in 18 points. 6’5 2013 PF Myles Marshal had 14 points and played bigger and stronger than his size. Marshal has a physically mature body and has excellent leaping ability. He plays with passion and purpose and is a blue collar worker on the offensive and defensive boards.

After participating in the Reebok Showdown, Team Vision traveled to Morgantown WV to play in the Hoop Group West Virginia Jam Fest. Team Vision opened up with a four point loss to Etobicoke Thunder of Canada. The opposing team simply had too much height and size, but the 6’2 Matthew Woods continued his outstanding play with 24 points. 6’7 Timothy Williams of Asheville High School got into the act with 18 points but threw down six dunks with three of him that brought the house down! In addition, Williams grabbed eight rebounds. Team Vision rebounded well and beat Mountain Cat by 18 points in a total team effort. Twagirayezu and Woods poured into 22 and 18 points respectively while 6’8 PF Ethan Gills had 15 points and 6 rebounds. 5’8 SG Ben Phelps of Asheville Christian had four 3 pointers but took four charges in the game for an outstanding defensive performance. Unfortunately, Team Vision dropped the next game to Maryland United by eight. Top performers were Ben Phelps (5’8 Shooting guard from Asheville Christian Academy 2013 Class) had 17 points,  Matthew Woods ( 6’2 Point guard from Asheville Christian Academy 2014 class) he had 13  points, Patjo Twagirayezu ( 6’6 wing from Asheville Christian Academy 2013 class)  had 12 points, Ethan Gillis (6’8 power forward from Rabun Gap School, GA 2013 Class) had 9 points with 6 rebounds before rolling his ankle again.

Meet the Raleigh Capitals 17U team

One of the bigger joys of covering teams and events for the Phenom Hoop Report is reporting about “players/teams under the radar.” More importantly, we think it is necessary to give mention to the countless AAU teams that are doing things the “old fashion way” by playing with a roster of local standouts. Too often today, AAU has gotten about which team has the shoe contact and shoe money as they use the money/power to recruit the top players from their state and region. That being said, we constantly hear about the non-structure of AAU and not enough credit is given to the coaches that personally have a vested interest in helping provide a platform for their local players to get seen and hopefully play themselves into a college scholarship. Local or grass root AAU programs usually don’t have the money or resources to play in the bigger tournaments, but it is refreshing to see the dedication from the coaches and players to player with a purpose and desire. The Phenom Hoop Report quote of “playing hard should be the norm rather than the exception” is a perfect illustration of today’s feature AAU team in Raleigh Capitals.

Our story today is about the local Raleigh Capitals. We first watched the Raleigh Capitals at the Reebok Showdown back in May at the Gateway YWCA. While they were competitive, they were missing a very valuable member of their team in  Chris Corchiani. During the last July “live period,” the Raleigh Capitals traveled to Orlando, Florida to play in the 17U AAU Nationals. While the Raleigh Capitals started slowly by going 1-2 in pool play, they rebounded nicely and finished 3-1 in the Classic Bracket. This turnaround of events speaks volume about the character of the coaches and players. Too often, many teams simply give up after not qualifying for the championship bracket, but the Capitals proved they were about playing hard with heart, desire and determination. Below is their pool play and classic game summary.

Pool Play
L 46-52 BSAElite
L 74-64 Texas Pro
W 64-21 NJC Elite

Classic Bracket
W 74-51 NE Cyclones
W 64-53 Florida Gold
W 87-64 Se AL Birmingham Ice Xpress
L 80-61 E1T1

Head Coach Brent Nolan stated the “Raleigh Capitals had a slow start in pool play losing to pretty evenly matched teams.” From the box score, they lost 52-46 to BSA Elite and 74-64 to Texas Pro. In the game against BSA, 6’3 WG Jacob Barret of Rocky Mount Prep was the team’s leading scorer with 20 points while 6’1 SG Patrick Domville of Cardinal Gibbons HS lead the team in scoring with 19 points against Texas Pro including five 3 pointers. Coach Nolan stated “Domville is a lights out shooter who does great academically and is probably looking to go to a more prestigious academic school at the D2/D3 level or walk on at the D1 level.

6’6 southpaw combo forward Stephen Vassor put in a double-double in their win against NJC with 17 points and 13 rebounds. We wrote the following about Vassor at the Reebok Showdown back in May. “Vassor is a physically mature athletic PF that had a productive tournament. His sheer physical strength is his greatest attribute and he used his power in the low post effectively, but also showcased the ability to step out and knock down 3 point shots. His pure athletic ability should garnish him plenty of D1 interest. We really liked his hustle, passion and ability to compete on both ends of the court. While he was undersized guarding bigger players in the post area, he did not back down from the challenge. Coach Mike Palmer of the Raleigh Capitals stated the following, “ Vassor is a tremendous athlete and challenged other teams at the rim on both ends. He also has 3 point range and is a kid with a really high ceiling,” and we agree wholeheartedly with his assessment. Without question, lower tier D1 schools should definitely be monitoring the process of Steven Vassor.”

In bracket play, Coach Nolan was impressed with the play of 5’11 PG Chris Corchiani Jr. of Raleigh Broughton High School. Chris Corchiani Jr. has a tremendous blood line and his father was a legendary player at NC State and was part of the famous duo of “Fire and Ice.” Coach Nolan stated Chris Jr. is  a “big time competitor which shouldn’t surprise you. He plays in the same backcourt of Davonte Graham at Broughton who has multiple D1 scholarships.” Against the NE Cyclones Chris had 16 points and 8 assists,  but had a monster game of 25 points and 7 assists against a very talented Birmingham Ice Express team. Chris Jr. is an alum of the NC Phenom 150 camp and we would agree with the assessment from Coach Noland. In our opinion, Chris Jr. is the ultimate team player who is excellent in running the show for his AAU and high school team. He has excellent fundamentals and basketball IQ. He plays extremely hard and has a burning desire to win and his effort on the court exhibits this mindset. In our opinion, he is a solid D2 player that has an opportunity to play at a high academic D1 school or could make an excellent invited “walk on” at a high D1 school.

Coach Noland also stated Zach Palmer has a huge basketball IQ and is a “lights out shooter” who is a solid D2/D3 player. Jacob Barret may be possibility transferring and reclassing and has a high ceiling according to Coach Nolan. “He can shoot the 3 and attack the rim ferociously. He also is a great perimeter defender and is a definite D1 athlete.”

For more information about the Raleigh Capitals, you can email Coach Brent Nolan at brentnolan32@gmail.com
